In season 4 Kurumi's backstory was revealed where the spirit of origin aka Mio tricked her into killing some people she thought were bad and so that was the relationship the two had. Also if you want to watch the movies there is an ova that you need to watch in order to understand what is going on.

Also in case your wondering why this ending felt so much like a finale was the last part of the ep was anime original bc if they followed the light novels it would have ending in a massive cliffhanger (I could tell it to you if you want to know or not). I heard that they did this bc the studio went bankrupt so I guess they ending it in a way so that people felt it was a nice wrap to the show.
