The girls are all second year high schoolers, so they're 16/17 As for the timeline on the Kiui stuff, it's basically: Mahiru and Kiui are elementary school friends -> They go to different middle schools -> Kiui is unpopular and lies about it -> This goes on until graduation. (Side note: We see a picture of Mahiru and Kiui together in different uniforms with the little scrolls/certificates from graduation, which is presumably when they last saw each other.) -> They enter high school -> Kiui stops going to school -> Now we're second years and the show starts I understand the misunderstanding, though. I think I got it wrong the first time myself

If you're enjoying this, you might like Girls Band Cry that's also currently airing. It has similar themes but it's a lot more "raw" expression of emotion rather than the more wholesome friendship angle of Jellyfish. It's a really good show, though there is a hiccup in that there's no way to stream it in the West, but by now we have actual good fansubs that are decently easy to find. Love your reactions!
