The shorts and the first episode were significant for the amount of characters introduced, but I think as we go forward we'll be seeing less and less new characters per episode, as the heavy hitters slowly get ticked off. You could make an argument that only two "important" characters are introduced in this episode (Edna and Martin), and then MAYBE two d-listers (J. Loren and Richard.)

I have a wee peek ahead and I'm pretty sure every episode in season one has at least ONE new character, it'll be interesting to see how many we have by the end.
