Hello everyone! Harem Hotel released 5 years ago, on May 17th, 2018. Can you believe it's already been 5 years? It doesn't feel like it to me. While we've gone through some trials and tribulations, Harem Hotel is here to stay and I look forward to finishing it some day in the next few years :)

None of this would be possible without you guys, of course. Even if you haven't financially supported me, just playing the game and enjoying it is enough to keep me going many days. So thank you!

I'm still following that roadmap I made in last year's post, though some things have had to move around, the goals I have set are still in place to be achieved. I've released content slower than I would have liked, but I'm hoping that the workflow change I shared in Dev Diary #6 will change that, as I have plans to begin developing v0.18 sooner than any other version.

Where will the future of HH take us? It's hard to say exactly! Every year I surprise myself with what I'm able to do with the tools I have available to me. I've been studying more cinematography and writing, as these are two things that interest me a lot. At some point, I would love to switch to developing with a real engine like Unreal Engine 5. That's years away, and certainly won't happen for Harem Hotel, but I'm still learning those skills. UE5 offers near limitless opportunities if you know what you're doing. From making movies, to creating animations with mocap, so that's a long term goal of mine.

By the way, we have a community event going on in discord for the anniversary, so if you would like to join, you're welcome to!

Until then, you can stay updated with HH on Twitter and Discord

Runey I thank you for letting us join you on this journey. Your game was the first and ultimately my favorite visual novel. As a game programmer I like Unreal, but ultimately prefer Unity. Unreal has out of the box fidelity but Unity is the engine with limitless possibilities. Unreal is better for artist focused folks and people who want to avoid programming, but it also feels so much more limiting in comparison to Unity. The good news is Unity has a plugin (free) called Bolt that allows for visual programming as well.

Nonetheless it's a shame that harem hotel would never come to Unreal because I would love to see your characters in real time 3d.
