Hello everyone!
As Harem Hotel has grown, and the effort I put into it has increased over the years, maintaining the same work schedule proves to be increasing challenge. In the past I would be able to pump out multiple story events in a single day, but that was obviously because I was using the same assets. Now I often develop new environments, connect multiple stories, use multiple characters, and a lot more I didn't used to for each event. The world of Harem Hotel has grown a lot and only continues to grow!

In simple terms, my workflow consists of doing a lot of work for multiple months in a row, then doing no work, then coming back to work, then doing none again. Doing this helped me gather feedback, refuel, and prepare for the next update, but that doesn't seem to work that well now that Harem Hotel has grown so much.

In v0.17 Beta 2, one of Lin's events took me two full weeks develop, it's the biggest event in game by far, and by the end of it, my brain was so fried that I wasn't able to work the week after. So instead of working through bursts, I want to apply a more smoothed out and consistent workflow where I work more often, but also take more breaks. If I manage it well, I should be able to release more content throughout the year while also lowering my stress! It will be trial and error though, so try to bear with me :)

In other news, v0.17 Beta Build 3 should release next week. I think v0.17 will have a lesser quantity of events in total, but I'm very proud of what I've made in v0.17 so far. I think it's some of the best work I've done, and the quality has surely increased a lot :)

Oh, and we also have a community event going on in discord right now where the contents of fan art are being voted on! So if you would like to vote, please join!

Lewd previews during development can be found on my Twitter and Discord

As always, thank so much for playing and supporting!

Hopefully things work out for you and you can be at peace with everything. Nothing should come at the cost of your own mental health. 🫶🏼

Not that I know what kind of work schedule makes sense for you and is most effective but maybe a set time each day might be ok, just make it less than a full work day so you don't feel pressured? Tbh that also doesn't really kinda work for me just throwin a shot in the dark. that said, I hope you are able to find what works for you!! I'm excited for more updates but your health takes precedence!

Quantum Rooster

Seems very healthy and self-reflective. Now if I could just manage that in my own life. You have our support 100%.

Pascal Lindemann

Keep up with your own pace, your health more important. The amount of quantity isn't so important than a good quality. Take smalltalk steps if you need. Because your game is Goldstarlevel

is there going to be sex with Autumn option soon?

Some suggestions: Figure out what you find most enjoyable, and where possible use that as a reward for plugging through the more difficult stuff. Look for places you can gain efficiency (for example, creating several similar assets at once may let you power through them faster). Some of this may be easier if you can do more advance planning; if you figure out that over the course of several scenes, you'll need several new doors, you can make them all in one sitting, even if they're actually used across 4 different scenes. If there's stuff you don't like and can farm out to others, do that and focus more on what you enjoy.

Hey! I am glad to hear that you have found a rational way for yourself to allocate time for work and I am sure this will help you avoid stress and burnout.

Hey Runey, awesome job and happy that you found a way to reduce stress! So, I don't know if this has been asked or discussed yet, but...it seems that both Lin and Ashley are REALLY wanting to get Pregnant. So, it is going to happen? Or will that be when some, or all of the ELF problems are solved? Will our Hero and Harem have to move into a Mansion? Or, will our MC have to, or want to Marry into wealth? (Kali) Hint, hint. Just wondering and day dreaming I guess... :)

I know absolutely nothing about what goes into a game like this, but I think you are right. Surely this game is successful enough that he can hire an animator and/or script writer to generate rough drafts from his story boards. A lot of creatives go it alone for too long because leading a team makes them anxious. But there comes a time.

VitAnyaNaked

You put incredible effort into creating game content, it is highly appreciated. Keep it up and take some breaks from work!

Anything I can't do myself, I commission. But anything else I do couldn't be done by anyone else.

I hope your new time and energy budget works well for you. I want you to know the effort you put in to the last release really shows. Your normal level is among the best, but this last one seems on another higher level altogether. May all the health and happiness you can stumble upon be yours to keep.

Raven Number 7

I'm still hyped. I also can't believe how much time has passed since the first chapter. good stories take a while to complete so i get it. keep up the great work :)

The Omni Degenerate

Have you considered hiring someone to help? most other games with your size and funding usually hire one or two other people to help work on the game by now.

Runey

There's nothing anyone could do long term. Though sometimes I do pay people for specific work. And my goal with HH is not to make money and sell a product. It's to tell a story, to make art. I could speed up the process by hiring people to replace me, but it would dilute the product and probably lose its soul.

The Omni Degenerate

Not necessarily you can still do all of the writing and you can still be in control of the animations, but you can hire someone to help you create the scenery, backgrounds, renders and so on and then you can just edit them and go over them after the fact to make sure they’re up to your standard or make any final changes That you feel are needed you would essentially just be hiring someone to do most of the real busywork. Otherwise, your only other options are to take longer for updates or lower your quality or risk burn out or keep your quality high and your enjoyment hi but come out with like one update a year. Ultimately, it’s your game you can choose what to do but outside of hiring people I don’t see how you’re going to be able to lighten your load or speed up any releases at all. But that’s just my suggestion do what you want, of course

Runey

It's not that simple, I can't just hire someone with the same knowledge I have, nor is it simple to find someone capable of doing the same things I am or with the same drive I have. I am not a triple A gaming company using industry standard tools that people have taken years of college to learn. There is no hiring pool for me to pick from. The ones that would be interested are far more interested in companies that give them dental insurance, health insurance, etc. I'm just an indie dev. As I mentioned in this post, I have already changed my workflow. It does not involve taking longer, lowering quality, or risking burn out. It actually involves more updates.

The Omni Degenerate

I don’t mean to come off as argumentative, but I do feel i just need to clarify what I meant . I never said it would’ve been easy, and I never assumed you were some AAA gaming company. And when I said hire people, I ment like one other person to take care of background work. Like I said, I never meant to imply that you should hire an entire team of individuals. (and though not easy, let’s not pretend it would be impossible to find at least one other person who knows how to use the honey select engine/rnply) But you have made it clear that your main issue is it would “change the soul of the game” which is fine. Like I said you do you. I’m following regardless. waifu academy literally only comes up with one update like every year and I’m still following them lololol And yes, I did read the post, but at the end of the day I’m very skeptical, because we both know that creating Content takes time and that is not some thing that you can just magically generate without cutting into free time and risking burn out. Only time will tell, but I suspect this will result in more updates, but with roughly the same if not less amount of content per update for the amount of time spent on it. for easy math let’s say your usual updates provide 10 units of content and that’s about twice a year so it’s 20 units a year, this new workflow results in let’s say 4 updates a year but each update only has five units of content Yes we’re getting more updates but ultimately nothing has actually changed. And that’s why I said what I said because I find it very hard to believe that one person can keep doing more and more and more without succumbing to either delays or burn out. But hey, who knows maybe I’m wrong maybe you’ll manage to succeed in creating a workflow so efficient and consistent that it would make an AI drool. Only time will tell. I wish you luck
