Yes yes yes! I'm a huge Queen fan, so this movie is close to my heart, regardless of how bad it is (and it is bad). I've watched a lot of critiques of the movie, and agreed with most of them, but I've not seen anyone address what bothered me most about it - Freddie is so infantalised and one-note. Even Malik's performance, which is remarkable is several ways - is just one side of Mercury. The vocal impersonation is a neat encapsulation of it: yes, Mercury's speaking voice was sometimes breathy and cracked, but like all of us, he also had different speaking voices, and this impersonation only strikes one of them, vocal fry in every word! Similarly, the movie as a whole only strikes one part of Mercury's personality - childlike, naive, vulnerable, trying to fit and to please, a bit of a lost lamb. By all accounts he was often shy in private, but he could also be other things - funny, proud, strong, forceful, very, very pleasure-seeking, and an enthusiastic lover of JOY. Thanks for the vid, Large Joel! Play Queen loud!

Also, the stuff with Mary, at least some of it is simple biphobia; 'you can't trust that a bisexual man really loves you, there will always be something shifty in the relationship.' Much as it meant the world to me as a bi person to hear my hero say "I am bisexual" this was not a good bi film.

I know this comment is old but it always irked me so much how in reply to this Mary just says "Freddy, you're gay." and then the movie just moves on as if she's correct? And it never comes up again...
