don't mind if I do!

I am two minutes in and must say I enthusiastically agree with the nitpick. Even in this limited exposure to the scene it is overwhelming how unburned it all looks, even on the overhead shot.

lyrium

woo moo moo? moo moo moo moo moo?

lyrium

joel do you think the fire lord refused to play pretend with his kids and thats what fucked them up

Justin Chaillet

The biggest crime Ive been getting from seeing these reviews of the show is it just kinda seems boring lol, like why do we need so many episodes dedicated to how characters think aang abandoned them? Im begging the show to please have something new to say

El Mémé

Man that show is rough.

Carson Kirkley

THANKS FOR THE BIRTHDAY GIFT!!!!

John Sandfort

Could we get a vimeo link for this one?

finthetrashcan

i think similarly to kataras line with the acorn going against the goals of the character , the addition of azula being strung along by her father goes against one of my favorite traits of hers in the original which is her cunning. her face being almost constantly plastered with a grin even in interactions with the fire lord and in many fights in the series aids in this but they didn't seem to care about that either.

bigjoel

It’s not on vimeo, I tried uploading it straight to Patreon. It doesn’t work?

John Sandfort

It plays fine, I just prefer videos on Vimeo (or YT) so I can watch them on my TV with my partner. Not a big deal though

bigjoel

Ahh I can get it to you tomorrow, but I’m our right now. Sorry!!

One of my least favourite things in a long show is when I’m made to think “god just keep up” as a character is confused at the same thing over and over. Like why must writers make characters that cannot learn the most basic of things.

And Do Do Doo? And Do Do Do Doo?! Wum ma MA? Mum mum mumma?!

The whole "Katara confronting a truth but the truth is something extremely well-established" thing is especially annoying to me because they've scrubbed practically all of her character traits OTHER than her being traumatized by her mom's death. Like I swear they have heavy emotional moments going over her mom's death at least 5 times over the course of the season yet we see none of her enthusiasm for bending, her friendship with Aang, her pride and immaturity... just a blandly nice girl staring off into space and saying "it was so sad when my mom died". I really hate what they did with her character in this show.

innerchihiro

Couldn’t agree more with all of this. There was such a sense of restraint in the original show that was just thrown in the garbage here, like not seeing how exactly Katara and Sokka’s mom died until the last season when there was a narrative that required it to be shown. Not only do we see it in S1 here, we see it multiple times. It means nothing because we don’t have the context of who Katara is beyond it, that despite suffering with this terrible trauma she’s kind, hopeful, righteous, brave etc. etc. it’s kinda my same beef with them showing Iroh’s son so early, it just robs us of any mystery or intrigue with these characters.

Having to keep your face expressionless while talking to Koh was such a brilliant device for so many reasons, but my favorite aspect is that the audience could actually attempt to do it with Aang, or at least just think about it. It was so simple and so relatable that it naturally made you nervous to watch (it reminds me of the scene in Spirited Away where she has to walk across the bridge while holding her breath, a scene that Miyazaki put in specifically because it was relatable to a child). In this show I’m wondering why the hell Aang doesn’t bop that guy in the face for standing too close lol. Like it’s just weird for no reason and I really can’t find any rationale for making it that way.

Thank you Big Joel. Your heart is bigger than you know

i think it's notable enough to mention that the fog of lost souls is yet another meaningless reference, though it's from korra and not the last airbender (also obviously koh is not involved in the korra plotline it's taking from) which i think sort of adds to how incredibly strangely koh is handled here, like they changed a perfectly effective plot element into a reference and removed all the tension as an excuse to rehash sokka and katara's trauma for no real reason

Tbf to the ‘cycle of life’ comment…wood ash is really good for soil

Jessica Marcrum

Man, this episode was such a disappointment. Wan-Shi-Tong teasing a Neverending Story style challenge (the mirror gate) and then nope. We get a great looking and sounding Koh (thank you, George Takei) but they utterly destroyed his character. Aang still doesn't change his facial expression in their meeting but HAS NO REASON TO DO SO! It's just a callback to the cartoon! Such a waste.

Evan Schmidt

It's really sinking in how bland and mundane the world of Avatar comes across in this version. The vibe is like everyone met up to do an Avatar LARP in the woods because so many scenes are just wandering around boring, unremarkable forests and hills. And like, it's fair to say that a live action show has constraints around what it can do setting wise that an animated one doesn't, but in that case what is this adaptation bringing to the table? It feels like it's just not the right medium for this story.

Evan Schmidt

Also I'm definitely not in the "changes made in the process of adapting a story are always bad" camp, I think that's a super reductive perspective that people default to which ignores the fact that any transition from one medium to another is going to necessitate some alteration. But I can't help but feel a lot of the changes they made in this version are really arbitrary, like they just felt the need to remix stuff for the sake of doing it? Like Koh is a really iconic moment in the original show, why'd they feel the need to totally change his role to something more convoluted and less compelling? Why'd they think it would be better if Bumi was a huge dick to Aang? Is Azula really gonna work better as the primary villain of season 2 if we've already seen her insecurities on display and the fire lord doesn't really seem impressed by her? It just feels like they chip away at all these elements that worked perfectly well in the original story, and if you chip away at something too much then eventually you're left with nothing.

Ainjel

he did reupload it, but on Vimeo! You can access it on the patreon page :)

James O'Neill

Did you know you got Pippinpappleopsicopolous the third (Aang’s alter-ego from the season 1 Omashu episode) confused with Fufu Cuddleypoops from Bitter work?

Elias Willerup

In the cartoon Sokka’s father is so supportive and is huge reason he becomes more confident in himself, but in this version Sokka’s father becomes the source of his insecurities? Interesting choice that I hope they resolve meaningfully

joel sorry I don't comment, I luv these, love you, x0x0

Only just got around to watching this but the opening scene just pissed me off so much the way it was shot and the editing it’s hard to explain when you aren’t looking on it but they would have aang do his monologue and they would cut to this awful angle that didn’t make sense where you couldn’t see him from from the front yet you couldn’t see katara and sokka and it made absolutely no sense and it just pissed me off and gave me a headache. Here’s my epic tweet from the time so anyone reading this can see what I mean and compare it to the original. It is funny that both me and Mr Joel went back and watched the original scene immediately after seeing the remake for two different reasons https://x.com/sylvie_ish/status/1760865233256448107?s=46

3:30 I think that is something that has the potential to work more towards the end of her losing her mind it feels like there is some potential of them adding more depth to that. I don’t think it’s going to play out well based on the rest of the show. But I also feel people are more forgiving to accept the changes to the things we feel the original show lacked in. Like how quickly Azula has her mental breakdown. Like it’s probably going to be worse but because we were frustrated with the original show for rushing it a bit it’s more of an acceptable change comparing that to the other changes which feel meaningless and make the show worse
