One More Thing: Brinerot (Patreon)

Greetings Adventurers,

Now we journey into the high seas! I'm excited to say we're starting a new theme of One More Thing releases for the next few months where we'll be focusing on the seas! Ships, boats, creatures of the deep, and who knows what else? We're hoping to make a number of interesting addons for your campaigns, but first we start with a creepy creature, the Brinerot.

Design notes from Matthew:

Okay I've wanted to put together an ooze for some time. There's just so much creepy stuff you can do with it and they are just so alien in every way. In researching some possibilities, I came across the use of pitch on old ships to seal cracks and the like within the hull and I knew we had something going there. Making an ooze that can seamlessly imitate a black puddle felt perfect. It might not even be noticed as adventurers move around their ship.

The actual design of these was meant to keep them firmly as a stalker. I don't think they'll play super well in their big combat encounter, though they can hold their own and escape if they need to. The real point of them was to make them an ever present menace that people might have to figure out. Say a ghost ship rolls into a port and smashes into another boat, the PCs investigate finding little left behind and no crew. 

After a day or so someone goes missing in their house near the port and the mystery is on, what's behind it in the end? Well a whole pod of brinerots clopping around town causing menace after they latched to the ship. I just think that would be a fun little adventure culminating in fighting a massive one that I'd custom make. Well now I want to write it.

What a wonderful time to be creating as we move into a new theme. It's always exciting for me to get to explore new ideas and really try to stretch my legs on what we can make. It's great for me to try new things!
