The galaxy is a massive and ever expanding place filled with creatures unknowable and technologies far beyond what we have available here. Deep within the void of space, dying stars pull inward consuming light and other celestial bodies around it. We had an unusual encounter with a “visitor” to our realm who needed information. Typically we’re not one to turn things over easily, but it made an interesting offer in the form of a blade holding a shard of a collapsed star within. How can you turn down an offer like that?  We certainly couldn’t and now we present it to you.

Design notes from Matthew:

This idea was spawned from a discussion long ago on our Discord about some potential interesting ideas and we were finally able to bring it together. I’m not big on sci-fi theming, but when we can combine that with something fantastic, well now you have my attention. This sword specifically is something we’ve been wanting to make for some time, but just had to find the right window to release it.

I’m always a massive fan of combination mechanics when it comes to magical items. Sure, presenting a powerful item that just does something without much input can be fun, but if I can offer some more interesting mechanics, well then I’m a bit more interested. Dealing damage isn’t always the most exciting option, but creating a cloud of darkness that harvests light and transforms that into damage? Well now I am a bit more interested.

The hardest part of designing this weapon was getting the feeling right for how to control it. I didn’t want to eat a lot of actions to make it functional, but I didn’t want to make it entirely free either. One thing I’ve been doing more of lately is figuring out scaling mechanics that allow for items to grow with the character, so this seemed like a perfect fit.

It’s not often that we can find the right sci-fi bent to a fantasy item, so when we have an idea for one I just really love running with it to make it something special. There’s a lot to love for us with this weapon from the design to the mechanics. We hope you love it too.
