Duelist's Grace (Patreon)
Content
Greetings adventurers!
Not long ago, we were approached by a person with a rather imposing sword, demanding we duel for honor. Now, I don’t know if you know much about us, but we’re not fighters. Instead, we choose the academic pursuits that come along with this profession, so we chose to stay back and study what happened. Well, as it would turn out he seemed to challenge the absolutely wrong person. The duel didn’t last long, but it was uh… entertaining. Anyways, we didn’t see a reason to let the sword go to waste. Hopefully it brings you better luck.

Design notes from Matthew:
Up until the 11th hour, this was actually two weapons called Honor & Grace. You may yet see this pair in the future, so don’t be surprised if you do, though it will probably come under a different name. I had an idea for a weapon that increased defenses rather than just offensive abilities. It’s pretty normal to see weapons that add bonus damage and things of that nature, but I wanted a weapon that could make you more resilient as you got into the flow of battle. Perfecting that kind of balance can be a task.
Initially I had a number of extra bonuses that stacked over time, but it all just became so messy and difficult to deal with in the end. I learned from that though. I need to remember that while stacking bonuses sound cool, they’re often a bear to implement and run. Instead it’s better to just focus on one boon that you upgrade as you go and that’s what I decided to do with this.
Getting the wording right around the dueling partner was surprisingly difficult. I ended up seeking out skills like hunter’s mark and others to really get that language right. In the end it seems to have paid off.
A defensive weapon, I know it’s a bit odd but I’m glad we put it together. I like taking the expectations that we throw on items in 5E and giving them our own twist as we did this time. It’s nice to know that we don’t have to neatly slot into the standard expectations that come along with the game. We can design outside of it and that feels so great to do.
We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
