Greetings adventurers!

A rose by any other name is still a rose and an explosive flower by any other name is still explosive. These little dandies are certainly liable to spice up any party you might attend. Often found on the lapels of the highest of high society, some like to flaunt their wealth by showing they can afford to have something dangerous on them at all times. I think it’s a bit of an odd flexion of one’s wealth, but sure. I have to admit though, these brimstone blooms are beautiful. Perhaps I should put a few in my garden. Maybe the local herb thieves would think twice next time.

Our patrons get early access to all of these items as well as additional formats that are easily usable in both physical and online play for D&D and Pathfinder 2E. Additionally they get high-res art exports, easy to use text exports, behind the scenes updates, and a lot more.

Design notes from Matthew:

Sometimes, simplicity is the best thing you can do when designing an item. It’s common to get really in the weeds and even more common to try to overdesign something, but realistically, you can just do simple things with good theming and make something quite enjoyable. I had an original idea of a much more complex interaction here in how to create the fiery burst that comes from this plant, but in the end I was just left wondering why I recreated fireball when it is literally an easy thing to reference and something people get excited to cast.

On both versions of this, I took a bit of inspiration from the orcish features and feats to remain at 1 hit point when normally you would be dropped to zero. It was a straightforward way to accomplish what I wanted without having to design a whole new mechanic. On top of that, provide the ability to dodge the effects of the spell and that handles the feature element of this item.

I felt it could use a bit of rounding out via passive benefits so I sought to design ones that would make sense for each system. In 5E you have to be a little more cautious with resistance, but here I limited it to magical purposes to keep it mostly in line. In PF2E resistance already works how I would want it so that was an easy fit. I knew I wanted this item to be single use in a way, so the wilting on the end and becoming non-magical is its own balancing point. Don’t be afraid to give something limited uses, it can be the balance point you’re looking for.

I’m so excited about this month. We’ve got a number of fun things coming up including a big ole enemy to round out the month as well as our attendance at Paizocon during the last weekend of the month. We expect it will be a little busy with a vacation in the middle, but nothing wrong with busy!

We highly encourage you to join our Discord server where you’ll get access to exclusive channels that have sneak peeks, behind the scenes chatter, and more.
