Here's another early access perk for you, a rather beefy video about how to make these animated dust particles with Blender. I considered splitting this one up into several episodes, but then I thought I'll make use of chapter points instead. In the YouTube description, you'll be able to click on a timecode and jump straight to a desired section.

There's a lot going on in the process, and practice makes perfect. I've included two scene files for you too, one that I've built during the video, and another one with 4 different particles that will serve as a starting point for another video that's coming soon.

I'll put this live next week, probably as a YouTube Premiere. If you have any questions, please let me know :-)

  • 00:00 - Introduction and Overview
  • 02:10 - Setting up the light and camera
  • 04:40 - Setting up the Particle System
  • 09:15 - Adding a Turbulence Force
  • 13:00 - Building our first Dust Particle
  • 15:30 - Setting up the Volumetric Material
  • 18:00 - Adding our own geometry to the Particle Emitter
  • 19:55 - Randomising our Particles
  • 22:20 - Adding a Material to our Particles
  • 24:30 - Adding Depth of Field to our Camera
  • 28:00 - Fun Fact about very wide Apertures
  • 30:25 - Changing the distribution of our Particles
  • 31:25 - Caching our animated particles
  • 33:50 - Adding a second Dust Particle
  • 38:00 - Goodbye and Credits

I've also got some written instructions here, and while I was writing the article I've generated another blend file that I thought I'd share with you too. Comes out a little different every time ;-)
