I wanted to give you all a quick heads up about a recent development at Patreon, which involves the company having to charge sales tax on top of your contributions. They've explained the details and implications in this article

As I understand it, Patreon charge tax in some countries already, so if you make a $10 contribution, they bill you $12 (depending on the rate of tax in said state/country). This would mean that depending on where you live, and the size of your contribution, Patreon will start charging you more.

It appears that this change might not kick in for donations under $5, but I guess we'll only see what happens on the first of July.

I know that times are tough, and I absolutely positively value every single donation I get, whether it's on Patreon or via any of the other options listed here. Because of that, I'm happy to take the tax hit at my end.

Sadly it's not something Patreon let us easily do at this time. You'd think a simple tick box option would sort this out, but I guess they didn't think of offering that. You can however change into a lower tier on your own, or you can make a "custom pledge" and give any amount you want. This article explains how to do that.

If you're OK with the tax thing, you don't need to do a thing - and I love you all the more for it. 😍

Should you need any help with these matters, or anything else in these trying times, leave a comment or send me a message. You're also more than welcome to join any of my morning Stardew streams on YouTube, I'm there every day at 10am EST / 3pm UK / 4pm Europe / midnight Oz. It's the ideal place to shoot the breeze and stay connected.

Stay safe while we sail out of The Pandemic. Thank you for your continued support 💜

I chose the $1 option, but I would have chosen a $3 option if you had it. (Am I cheap for not choosing the $5 option?) My question is what exactly are they taxing? I'm in the US, and local sales taxes apply for some items, but not on tips. That's income tax on the person earning it of course. If they tax me they tax me. You shouldn't have to eat it.

Very good question indeed. I believe they still distinguish between taxable and non-taxable tiers. So if I were to sell something like a product, it would be taxable. But a tip or donation does not require them to charge tax. From what I hear of other creators, we’re all just confused and are eagerly awaiting the 1st of July... About the $3 option - there’s a way to make a custom pledge for any amount you like. Some of my supporters use it, but Patreon don’t make it easy to find. Thanks for the feedback!
