You asked for more hardcore female characters - The obvious ones (for good reason) would be Ellen Ripley (Alien franchise) and Sarah Connor (Terminator franchise). Other roles that come to mind: Angelina again in ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ and ‘Salt’ and ‘The Bone Collector’ (not action but a strong role IMO) All in ‘The Descent’ Saoirse Ronan in ‘Hannah’ Gina Carano in ‘Haywire’ Geena Davis in ‘The Long Kiss Goodnight’ Mira Sorvino in ‘The Replacement Killers’ Milla Jovovich in ‘Resident Evil’ franchise Kate Beckinsale in ‘Underworld’ franchise That should keep you going for a bit (unless you’ve already seen them all)

I have two film suggestions that feature Ellen Burstyn in the lead roles - "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (1974), directed by Martin Scorsese, and "Resurrection" (1980). Neither of these are action films but feature strong female characters trying to make their way in the world on their own terms. These films don't top anyone's list of reaction requests but something you might want to check out for the great performances.
