I think this winter scene is just artistic representation. Instead of narrator saying that at this moment Mahito for the first time was prey and Yuji predator they decided to show Mahito running with rabbits and Yuji slowly walking with wolves. I think the way they were flipping between "wolf tracking rabbit" representation and what was actually happening supports my idea about this scene.
