The opening segment of WWE Raw changed Monday, and we've learned more about what was planned.

Tommaso Ciampa returned on WWE on Monday night defeating The Miz, but he was actually supposed to answer the open challenge of Seth Rollins. The match between Rollins and Ciampa was set to get a ton of time, but was changed multiple times over the weekend prior, and a few hours before the show.

Internally, the match was listed as TBA vs. Seth Rollins, but was changed to have Rollins attacked and Ciampa to face the Miz. We're told that the move was a Vince McMahon move and all of those originally planned for the match wanted the match to go through as planned. We haven't heard that it was so Ciampa wouldn't lose his first match back, as there was a plan in order that would have been a non-finish. Those backstage said that those around the match were clearly frustrated by the change.

There has been an internal plan to reunite Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano, and Gargano was backstage, but he wasn't planned for the show by the time the night of rolled around.

The Finn attack was better for the story

The Finn attack made sense to build up to his match with Seth. Vince actually made a good call here. He doesn’t often, but credit where it’s due.

Not all Vince changes are bad

I'd like to share an email from an obsessed fan -- "nunyabizznazz@protonmail.com> Sean you stole that from BWE. You really trying to pretend you broke that story... come on Sean do better." No. That story claimed that Triple H made the call because he didn't want Ciampa to lose. A non-finish was on the table with a big moment tied to it. It was a Vince call to change it and those associated were clearly frustrated.

Honestly, I think Vince might’ve made the right call. It heated up balor and ciampa didn’t lose his first match and he beat the guy he was “aligned” with when he was last on tv

Ngl rare instance where vince made the right call

Also a non finish to a title match seems counterproductive in establishing our new world title in its third televised defense

Justmask

But a non finish in our new world titles defense seems a little silly if we’re trying to build it up

This sounds like a case of butting heads to me. And it carried on for a while.

My feelings about this will depend entirely on the follow up. If Ciampa can just get this win and move on, great. If we have to hear him talking about The Miz's tiny balls for the next six weeks it isn't. The Miz's storylines drag down everyone he's involved with.

Is that BWE dude legit or he a clout chaser?

That would have actually heated up ciampa if they were going to have a non-finish.

Good. This sounds like the right call. The Finn/ Rollins story needed help, and Ciampa has done nothing on the main roster to earn himself a non-finish against one of the most popular guys on the roster. Let him win some matches against people like Xavier Woods and The Miz, then give him some promo time and see if he can generate momentum.

While I understand the frustration for Rollins and Ciampa, and I hope we do get that match in the future, I think the only miss with these changes was not involving Gargano. Could have had Miz try to leave his match and have Johnny come out and stop him, leading to the eventual finish and a DIY in ring reunion. I think giving Ciampa a win on his first match is better than even a non-finish of a title match.
