Mercedes Mone was slated to win the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship prior to her injury at Resurgence.

Fightful Select confirmed last week that Mercedes was slated to defeat Willow Nightingale at Resurgence to become champion. Since then we’ve learned that Mercedes herself called for the end of the match and the change in the finish when she realized something went wrong physically, at that time only known to be a leg/foot injury. We’ve been told since then that the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship was created with her in mind.

New Japan Pro Wrestling is under the impression that the injury that Mercedes sustained was a severe sprain without a break. However, those close to Mercedes have said that there’s definitely a sprain and the fear of a break. There was too much swelling to know for sure, and they’re hoping to have a clearer picture of where things stand after the swelling has gone down. Right now we haven’t heard of her planned for any imminent matches due to the injury.

Mercedes was said to have been in a ton of pain after the match, and was helped through the back by Tamina and others.

i hope mercedes heals up soon, but i am excited to see what they plan to do with willow as champ. willow definitely deserves that push too

There's a part of me that doesn't like that Willow is only champ due to an injury, but it happens. Hope Mercedes heals and hope Willow runs with this. They're both awesome.

Hoping for the best

High ankle sprains can be very severe, but that might at least give her the opportunity to compete in Open Door depending on the severity if it's not in fact a break.

In my experience, granted it was high school but still, I recovered and resumed playing football/baseball about 6 weeks quicker from a clean ankle break then I did a high ankle sprain

A high ankle sprain can take 8 to 12 weeks easily if severe- I would be surprised if she has not had x-rays yet. I would think by now, she would have gotten an MRI to help determine if there is a fracture or the degree of damage to the ankle syndesmosis/ligaments.

It really depends on the severity I think. I got a high ankle sprain from drunkenly trying to jump over a bench (the bench won). Swelled up like crazy and I totally thought it was broken the next day. Had to use crutches for a couple weeks, but it got better pretty quickly after that.

Ankle injuries suck, I had an ankle fracture that I played my first year of college soccer on, it took like 6 months until I felt 100% again. Granted, I came back early and played on it but still, ankle injuries SUCK.

If it's still swollen a week later, I feel like that means something is broken.

A foot/ankle injury with swelling and she hasn’t had an X-ray? Kinda strange.
