In an update on the Cody and Brandi Rhodes AEW departure, the locker room began talking last Wednesday, when neither were seen in Atlantic City for AEW Dynamite. Leading up to that, many talent that we spoke to were suspicious that Cody Rhodes' entire contract situation had been a work, with a lot of question marks regarding the legitimacy. However, they came to realize that the situation was real. It became clear to a few by Friday that a deal likely wouldn't be reached.

We've heard from AEW sources that some had reached out to Cody over the weekend, but the situation was downplayed, and he even said that word of him leaving was conjecture, and he was simply negotiating. Those that had spoken to him say that he claimed he loved working with AEW and Tony Khan. There are several production employees in AEW who were partial to working with Cody Rhodes, as he went to bat for them within the company.

Despite reports to the contrary, Fightful never gained a confirmation that Rhodes to the Top would be returning for a second season, despite asking WarnerMedia, AEW and TNT numerous times. Those we spoke to in AEW have not seen any filming for the program taking place of late. There are hopes that other wrestlers can be featured on reality programs, with Darby Allin being filmed of late.

We've not yet heard of any non-compete attached to an EVP separation, but Cody's deal expired at the end of December. Rhodes' team has spoken with WWE, who were aware that the AEW departure announcement would be coming at 10 AM.

This is a work. It almost has to be. December 28, Cody says that AEW fans are about to get on a bizarre rollercoaster with him that they don’t expect. Mox didn’t leak. Punk didn’t leak except for the few leaks they wanted out there. Cole didn’t leak. Brodie didn’t leak. NOTHING leaks out of AEW, especially contract talk. If Cody is legit going back to WWE, meh, good for him I guess. But he’s part of the backstage foundation of AEW… he isn’t going anywhere unless he’s retiring.

Or he shows up at the chamber?????????

Talk about plot twist. It's all about the dollars at the end of the day. Or a passion project. I can definitely see Cody really trying to put together the NWA into a bigger promotion. With other investors and The free agent talent pool it's possible. Or Cody is getting the WWE mega push with tv deals on peacock. Cody going back to WWE will 1000% make me watch his segments.

that would make it more than clear to everyone why he left & that would make AEW fans dislike him even more

Wizard Of Smoke

On one hand, Cody is a sports entertainer. Reality show, game show and on-screen performer. He fits the WWE mold more than AEW, and that is what rubbed a lot of AEW fans the wrong way. But then on the other hand, he was not a fan favorite in WWE either. As Stardust or Cody. People forget that. My opinion, as a fan, I hope the best for him whatever he does. Never been a fan of his because he could never sell me on his character like his dad did. And for him to go back the WWE, shows more about his character in real life, not just the on-screen entertainer. But it is a win-win situation. AEW's young talent will be able to shine brighter, there will be more money to wrap up MJF and Jade, and WWE will hopefully turn the page and elevate their product with Cody there as well!

Spot on! Thank you I could not agree with you more. He has his good moments in the ring. That cage match was sloppy but insane to watch

Well, if Cody goes back to WWE, my guess is Brandy will be sitting at home ,and Cody will be back as Stardust. smh

This frees up some TV time for sure. I want him to do well in whatever he does, but I can't help but feel like he's gone against a lot of what he planted his flag about, should he go back to WWE. I get that he was always someone who was about bluster, but Cody was the face of alternative for a lot of disgruntled WWE fans who felt underserved. My wife just put it perfectly, "I thought AEW was his thing for a long while until I found out someone else was running it." He was central to the events and effort that created the environment where AEW could become a thing.

Highly unlikely they’d try to revisit that gimmick… he’s done more under his name and his name has weight in the community…

Most elaborate heel turn ever

Hope he does well in WWE, I liked him in AEW but always liked a lot of other people a lot more.

Surely he'll been on NXT tonight as its the Dusty final

Thank goodness for wrestling news today. I thought the Prince William sexual assault settlement talk is all I thought I would get today online. Lol. Seriously, if Cody steps foot in WWE, his career as we know it is over. He'll get jobbed to hell, and no outside ventures that he has now they will let him do I think. Vince isn't going to let him have any control over his character or anything else backstage as long as the 2 dummies Bruce and Johnnie Ace are there to continue to screw everything up. RIP Cody's career as we know it. Hopefully he goes elsewhere.
