Last night's main event segment featuring Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair went awry, to say the least.

Fightful learned shortly after the show that something didn't go according to plan, and PWInsider reported that Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair had a heated argument backstage after the segment over Charlotte "making Becky Lynch look bad" by throwing down the title when it wasn't called for in the script.

Fightful has heard more details on the situation. The original script actually called for Becky Lynch to grab the title away from Charlotte Flair and brag about being "Becky Two Belts" before Sonya Deville would order her to hand her title to Charlotte. We're told Charlotte Flair didn't agree this was the best course of action, but was told to stay the course. However, we've heard that most everyone had already been in agreement the segment was going to be an awkward. After Charlotte dropped the title on the ground, Lynch ended up throwing hers at Charlotte, which we're told was planned for the segment, contrary to original reports.

After the segment concluded, there was a shouting match backstage, and we're told that Charlotte had stated that dropping the title was accidental. Fightful has also been told that Charlotte Flair was asked to leave the venue before Becky Lynch's dark match concluded as to avoid further confrontation and let things cool off.

Much of the roster, staff and officials had already left for the evening, as there was a heavy travel week. We'll work to find out more, as we've heard there's been friction between from at least one side going back a while, as TalkSport has reported, and can confirm that she'd taken issues with booking this week, namely the finish of Raw, to at least one person backstage.

In an update, there were members of the roster that challenged the idea that Charlotte "campaigned" to lose to Bianca Belair on Monday, although she seemed fine losing the match. We're told that Charlotte has been outspoken about creative, regardless.

There were several backstage who had already suspected that things would go awry before the Smackdown, and numerous people that we spoke to say that both women were put in a lose-lose situation that got even worse based on how it went down. Charlotte went over the original plans backstage with Lynch, Sonya Deville, and those assigned to writing the segment. The confrontation took place as Charlotte Flair came backstage, and Becky Lynch had to go out to work a dark match with Bianca Belair. Vince McMahon was said to have been very frustrated with how things went down, though we haven't heard an update on if he's spoken with Charlotte Flair since.

Those that Fightful spoke to were not of the belief Charlotte accidentally dropped the title during the segment, as claimed after the angle.

I thought it was accidental when I first saw it myself

any truth to the report that their relationship has been rocky for the last few years?

Accidental my butt

Leron Ford

This is why they should have booked the matches differently. All it did was make everyone involved look bad.

Anonymous

This could have been avoided. Why make a ceremony out of a process no one cares about???

Joel Wood

So Sean, is the story of Vince being unhappy that Charlotte left gorilla without talking to him accurate? Her being asked to leave the venue would seem on the surface to contradict that but I’m no expert obviously

Leron Ford

It will never happen, but I would be completely fine if they just let Charlotte walk just so we see how she does somewhere else.

Ian Henry

Definitely not a good look for Charlotte.

So Charlotte dropping the Raw title was probably an accident but I don't see why she also dropped the Smack Down belt after Becky tossed it at her? Either way, the title exchange segment turned out even worst than expected. Still can't believe they really had no other way of avoiding this.

Wulf

This could have all been avoided honestly. The ceremony was a dumb idea to begin with. I admit I don’t have a better idea but I’m still salty both Rhea and Bianca aren’t the champions still.

Eric Romero

lol what a shitshow

Wallace Koalis

Hear me out… instead of this convoluted “awkward” garbage, they could just BOOK A BETTER SHOW.

Jose Bautista

Becky beating Bianca in seconds and now them wanting to ripped Charlotte title away from her and say that corny ass line lol man there was never gonna be a follow up with that Becky/Bianca match. It was just WWE focusing on one person per division like they do best.

Anonymous

I mean… aren’t we just getting worked here? They’ll have a Survivor Series match to promote.

Bryan

Even Charlotte has a better creative mind than the head booker.

Anonymous

This might make the survivor series match more interesting but I still don’t care

JB

Super disagree. Upset that she couldnt lose clean to a rising star is a great look imo

Jesus Christ. This is one big ol' clusterfuck after another. Bianca should've won on Monday and Sasha should've won on Thursday but this company got themselves into this trainwreck. It's annoying.

It’s been pretty obvious for a long time if you listen to Charlotte’s interviews that she has issues with Becky & the fans loving Becky. She’s got a massive chip on her shoulder about not being as loved as the other 3HW & she doesn’t understand why.

Joetourious

I feel there’s a huge tension between these girls; like a Bret/Shawn tension now. But the Bret is dealing with her dad being canceled and her husband being in a company which allows him to do whatever he wants

Anonymous

If anything Charlotte is Shawn in this scenario. Going off script, refusing to do what she’s supposed to, politicking backstage, unpopular backstage with the “boys” Becky on the other hand is well liked by the locker room & appears to be nothing but a professional to deal with by all accounts.

The better idea was Bianca wins it from Flair on Monday and Becky looses hers to Sasha at Crown Jewel. Both belts then on the right brand. Predictable but a million times better than handing over title belts. It's insane, this actual adds another title rein to them both without any merit.

Raul Ortega

Props to Charlotte wanting to lose to belair clean

ARose Lab

Simply because she knows she'll be champion soon enough again anyway and it will count for another reign regardless

I love me some backstage drama *grabs popcorn*

this makes becky look like such an yes woman and charlotte being the actual sensible person wanting things to make sense. i wanna say i never expected the outcome where becky would disappoint like this

Elaquent

This could’ve been avoided if they didn’t just book them to switch titles lol

MrBigBadBean

Seems like 100% fault goes to booking a segment where nobody involved is completely on board smh

Auntie Collins

Charlotte was definitely not in the wrong. I feel like the writers were exhausted from booking the blood money show that this was an afterthought. But Charlotte was not placed in the Saudi show so I speculate that Charlotte felt her title reign was an afterthought. I mean, look who she won the title from… but Charlotte had a banger of a match vs Bianca this week that was overshadowed by the blood money PPV. I can’t say I wouldn’t have acted the same all things considering.

What would happen at your job if your boss asked you to do something that was part of your responsibilities & you instead decided to not do that & then, in fact, just do the opposite? And your excuse was “I didn’t like that I wasn’t invited to the big meeting you had yesterday, so…… “

Charlotte going against the script, seems bad

I don't watch Smackdown, but YouTube TV still records it. So, I just went back and watched this. Becky's awkward lunge for the belt did seem to dislodge it from Charlotte's hand. I'm perfectly willing to believe that Charlotte has been in tantrum mode ever since things turned south with Andrade and the WWE. This one seemed accidental, though. I'm saying that as someone who read the story and then watched the outcome. Both of them kinda laughed and neither one seemed mad at first. Then, Becky seemed to grow angrier. So, I suspect there's more to it.

(The person I felt bad for was Sonya DeVille. Her body language was very much "I've got real problems and don't need you prima donnas acting out".)

The sad thing is that the whole thing could have been avoided easily. Charlotte could have dropped the raw title on raw to bianca, and Becky could have dropped the smackdown title to Sasha at crown jewel, and everything would have been aligned. But no, they created a perfect scenario to put the titles on the proper brands talents and instead, they do another absurd exchange. With two people that have huge egos and actual issues with each other. Then McMahon gets mad that it goes bad? What the hell did he think would happen? They had the perfect matches booked and didn't run with the obvious angles! They chose instead to go with the worst possible scenario and then have the gall to get mad when it blew up in their faces? Maybe if McMahon would listen to other people than his yes men, things might improve. McMahon can't handle making these decisions anymore. He is just getting worse and worse.
