A major star's WWE contract is coming due sooner than later, and it's one most people don't expect.

Fightful has been made aware that one WWE contract expires much sooner than originally thought by the public. Kevin Owens did an interview in May of 2018 with TVA Sports where he'd stated that he'd signed a new 5-year contract that would carry him into 2023. However, as it turns out, that deal is actually now up in January 2022, according to WWE sources. Specifically we've learned the date is up January 31.

We've learned from a WWE official that WWE restructured several contracts ahead of the pandemic, and for whatever reason, Kevin Owens' deal was changed to expire in January 2022. We were not told of any additional terms of the deal or specifically why it was shortened. We'll work to find out if any other deals were adjusted.

WWE has had contract issues of late with Pete Dunne and Adam Cole, but we're told by officials that they're aware of when Owens' deal would be up. Owens, real name Kevin Steen has been with WWE since they announced his signing in August 2014.

and sami is up this fall right?

Anonymous

Oh yeah, he's 100% gone. He's way too good to not be featured weekly.

Kevin Steen is ALL ELITE

Anonymous

He just made the mount rushmore tweet then deleted it too, crazy

Insomnia Inc

Holy mother loving fraggle rock.

Jordan Lassiter

However I do think he will resign I mean I don’t think he’s being used too good but he’s not being mistreated

Anonymous

Very interesting. Wonder if/what has changed when they review contracts.

Anonymous

Just screamed at my phone with this notification. Mount Rushmore incoming yessssss

andrew evans

Welp kevin Steen to AEW confirmed

Anonymous

Dubbalos really over bryan and cole already. It ain’t about seeing these people succeed in other places, it’s about which ex-fed guy goes to AEW, they get bored, rinse-repeat.

Anonymous

Are they gonna let KO slip away too?

Jared Searcy

Oh my god. At least they know it expires in 4 months unlike the Adam Cole deal. Interesting times.

Anonymous

This Patreon is the best 5 bucks I have spent in a long time.

Anonymous

Genuinely though. They're gonna regret kicking 2point0 to the curb like that. Kev's gonna make the jump

Anonymous

Isn't Sami's almost up as well?

Anonymous

Keep feeding him Logan Paul, 2022 can’t come any faster for him

Anonymous

This makes me sad love him in WWE sure he will also end up in AEW then

Rincewind

I imagine he'll re-sign, but the *remote* possibility of a Mount Rushmore reunion will give him ample leverage for negotiations.

JB

Don't be weird, please. Fightful rules in part because the comment sections aren't weird loyalty warzones. Dunk on AEW if you want but going after the fans is bizarre

Kevin Owen's Twitter page location says almost there lol 👀😰

Axel M

I forgot for a second that we are in 2021, and 2022 is just less than 4 months away

Anonymous

We might get the Mount Rushmore of Wrestling back!!

Anonymous

Hoo boy

Simon Renshaw

I'd love to see him in AEW.

Anonymous

Definitely one of those "Oh, shit. Maybe I should wait on that." moments.

Anonymous

This is why I love Select

Anonymous

Oh man! I think he has to do it. And now Jericho can’t retire.

Kevin Steen to AEW confirmed *Oli Davis fist pump*

Sean Taitt

Steen would be so awesome in AEW , maybe sammy would follow 🤷🏽‍♂️

Anonymous

Trying to imagine myself as a wrestler, I can't imagine wanting to go to wwe or staying there for anything other than crates of money

Anonymous

Feel like this is a negotiation tactic with WWE. No reason for this tweet this early. You don't burn the WWE bridge this early (4+ months out).

Anonymous

mount rushmore incoming 😈

Anonymous

Best thing that could happen to Owen's and Zayn for that matter would be to get out as soon as they're able. Kevin is a top notch performer and I just wish he was used to the max of his potential. Hopefully he makes his way to AEW. Fingers crossed!

Scoops

I can't imagine Kevin or Sami stick around. I guess we will soon find out. Great info, as always!

Sign em all, TK! Haha.

ItsWildBoy

People on the Twitter are saying Sami's is up too. Is that true?

Steveisnotmyname

Him going to AEW would be awesome, and would reunite Mount Rushmore from PWG now that Cole is there too, but he seems like he likes it at WWE. I don’t think him or Sami would leave unless released, as much as I would love to see them both in AEW. Something tells me they both stay with WWE until they retire… but you never know these days.

JB

According to the fightful website his contract is up sometime in the fall of this year

e d

I kind of viewed KO as a locker room leader type and a stand up person. It would be a huge loss for them imo.

TorchCrawler

The main reason I'd see Kevin leaving is because he is a family man above everything else. One day WWE might start grinding people down 300 days a year again, if AEW could promise him (in writing) less time away from home for a still lucrative (but less) amount of money I can see him taking it.

David Pick

Steen and Generico are the two most wanted for me from there. Steen probably slightly ahead but ideally both together as I believe their sum of parts is worth greater than individual

Mt Rushmore is coming to AEW

AllGoodNamesRGone

SRS swinging that big dick scoops energy. Not sure how or why Sami's contract status "news" is circulating with the Owens news though.

Joel Wood

Kevin Owens has been one of the most well taken care of talents in WWE over the last 7 years. Nothing really shocks me anymore after Bryan Danielson ending up in AEW but it would really surprise me if Kevin left unless there was a breakdown in contract talks. He doesn’t do twitch so that can’t be an issue. He’s been used well, he gets freedom with his promos. The only reason I can see him leaving is his friends in AEW. There’s really no other reason that I can think of Everybody on Twitter booking his entire AEW run before his WWE contract even expires. I hate to burst the bubble. Not everybody is going to leave for AEW. Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson left for admittedly different reasons, none of which really apply to Kevin. Could he leave? Sure, he could. But he’s got 4 months left and people already booking his AEW debut. Relax and just see what happens.

Anonymous

i think we’re assuming he’s leaving because he’s teased it and his best friends (like cole) are running the company

Wallace Koalis

I for one enjoy the reckless speculation and fantasy booking of one of our favorite charismatic wrestlers potentially joining one of the most exciting things in pro-wrestling in my over 3 decades of viewership. Don’t “relax” people. Freak the hell out, be fans however you want, be excited. We’ve been saddled with mediocrity for too long. Sure, not everything we speculate will come to pass, but what does it hurt anyone. Sheesh, fan how you want to fan.

Chris Sully

if he does switch, it could just be he wants less dates for similar money so he can spend more time with family. Bryan had the same concerns and WWE Live events are kicking back up. I think with the pandemic and people getting the chance to slow down their priorities are now changing but WWE isn't pivoting to accommodate those desires, where as AEW is on the record as asking its talent when they have holidays planned and willing to change booking for family reasons despite it being a hot angle ala Page's coronation as AEW champ.
