Fightful had noted recently that there was a WWE tryout name that didn't receive an offer that turned several heads within the Performance Center and WWE, and raised some flags that the hiriing process had changed. It actually ended up being Wheeler YUTA, who is now regularly featured on AEW programming after his May 2021 WWE tryout. Fightful spoke with several NXT talent who confirmed having a discussion -- even with those of influence in NXT at the time -- about YUTA, and him being a perfect fit for what NXT traditionally had been. One NXT talent pointed out that Yuta is six feet tall, 24 years old, could already work, and had recent television experience and checked almost all of the boxes NXT had been looking for recently. Three individual NXT talents said that WWE not signing him was a "shock," with two noting that they could tell a major shift was coming when a guy like that didn't get picked up, despite clear AEW and ROH interest. The same WWE official we spoke with this past weekend noted that was a head-turner for them as well, but they weren't sure if Yuta was actually made an offer or not -- but that the idea that they didn't finish a deal was surprising.

There is not a company out there that wouldn’t benefit from getting Yuta under contract. Absolutely baffling even with the new direction nxt is headed

He’s been having killer matches on IWTV

Let me guess. He only fit 2of the 3 criterias. He's tall, he's young, but he doesn't look like he can be another star like Roman Reigns or John Cena.

Would love for AEW to pick this guy up, he could be a major player for them in a year or two. I'd be surprised if he doesn't sign somewhere soon.

I've been enjoying his performance, but I'm kind of surprised at the seeming lack of reaction he's gotten from the AEW crowd.

Damian Bushay

Probably his look. Doesn’t fit with Best Friends at all. And it was kinda random his placement

Worst management ever. He's a Japanese-American with global appeal, american english, young, and talented.

Ant

doesn't need to be with the Best Friends, I agree.

His performances have been good so far. I feel like he’s Chuckie T’s Young Boy, so we’ll see how that builds.

The guy has all the talent in the world. Maybe they offered him a deal and he didn’t accept it. Maybe they didn’t offer it at all, Which is a mistake if that’s the case. I don’t really get caught up in who they hire and who they don’t. They’ve lost some talent the last few months I’m upset about. They’ve also not signed talent I thought would be perfect for them. As long as the talent they sign can work or can be trained to work, that’s all I personally care about. Not where they came from. It still surprises me that they’d pass on a guy like that though but it is what it is I guess. He seems to have found his place since then so that’s good

He was actually the first person I thought of when this rumor floated out and sad to say I guessed right. At least his talent is being recognized elsewhere.

I might be giving WWE too much credit here, but maybe they just didn't wanna pry him away from his Best Friends for now.

IMO you could put Yuta in the same boat as Tay Cotti and Britt Baker that WWE didnt see the future in these people and then they show up in AEW and they are thrving. Considering WWE is going back to the 80s big guys style instead of high action bad ass match makers I wonder if someone is seeing them and feeling like they have egg on their faces?
