Fightful has learned that NXT referee Aja Smith is backstage at WWE Smackdown this afternoon. We aren't told the context in which she's there, just that she was seen at the Thunderdome Friday. WWE has been trying out Performance Center talent at television tapings in recent weeks. Aja Smith was signed by WWE in 2020 and became the first full-time African-American female referee in WWE history.
