Rocky Romero once tried out for Dario Cueto role in Lucha Underground (Patreon)

Rocky Romero as Dario Cueto? It could have happened.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful spoke to Rocky Romero ahead of NJPW Resurgence on May 11. The subject of Lucha Underground got brought up, and Romero said that he actually almost signed with the company.

Romero told us that he was under contract with NJPW, and was about to re-sign. He got an audition through his TV agent for Lucha Underground and met with creator Chris Dejoseph. Romero said "I tried out for Dario Cueto." DeJoseph then came back to him with an idea that Romero would be a janitor at the Temple, who would always be listening to what was going on. A big reveal would happen in season two that his family had owned the Temple and and Cueto had effectively seized the Temple. This would lead to a major feud.

However, the contract structure in Lucha Underground was so bad that the agent told Romero that it would bring his career to a halt if things slowed down, which ended up happening with Lucha Underground.
