Ah, this performance. Since I'm not that good at noticing subtle things in dance, I can't tell if this performance was more unrefined or if just the constant camera shifts and angle changes were throwing it off. It could be the former since this is the first live performance of it ever, but the latter can also factor in because in the Performance Vid. it's definitely more polished. All that said, Gahyeon really pops off during this performance in charisma. Like, she has been great with facial expressions for a long time now but this was something else. Really reminded me of her in BEcause era where she got a lot of shine. I totally get your confusion with the chorus. It put me off the track for a long time even with full audio (the performance audio is kind of muddled which doesn't help) because it's just not my thing. But when I compare it to most other similar songs, I really love Shatter way more because it does what I love with its concept. I'm a mythology nerd so it wasn't difficult to immediately see all the Medusa symbolism even before they talked about it openly: The snake rattle sounds in the instruments, the turning into stone imagery, the Medusa tableau of JiU in the first verse, etc. I don't know if it was intentional or not (I thought intentional first but can't be sure now) but even the part where they abruptly cut the track (because, well the singer finally fully turns to stone) in the end made the last syllable lowkey sound like a snake's hiss! I love it. That's also what happens at the end of the dance: Siyeon turns her gaze directly to the other six and although they try to shield themselves, they turn to stone. It's why Siyeon doesn't freeze with the rest of them - at least in that moment, she symbolizes Medusa. The song overall though is about someone in love with Medusa but who doesn't want to be trapped as a statue either, so it's super angsty and sensual. It's why the chorus is, very weirdly, "bang it on me, shatter": They'd rather be broken into pieces and be free (in death, presumably) than stay forever still as statues. The "shatter" enunciations in the chorus were also "muted" on purpose in general: The members were specifically trying to be extra sexy and sensual for that part. (I told you they wanted sexy concepts. This really is DC's version of sexy and sensual: being in love with a deadly being and losing your life for it. 😂)

Shatter confused me so much the first time I saw it - the entire song threw me off for the first time but I stewed on it for a day or two and listened again, and really started to vibe with it. I did have to find the mention of Medusa before I really understood the choreography and the song structure. Once I had the light bulb moment, I really began to love the track. It does have kind of an anti-drop, like falling off a cliff, but I think that was the intention for it with having Dami do the chorus bit because she is so much quieter and reserved in her tone. All of the stone-shattering imagery in the moves and Siyeon going for a very snake like sinuous move right there before the last chorus were some fun tidbits I could pick out once I knew it was Medusa.

Some of the dance moves are deliciously subtle with the imagery (or I'm just delusional). Like, I kind of lost it when I realized the ripple that starts with Gahyeon at 2:35 in the dance video (the camera angle in the comeback showcase doesn't let you see the ripple properly) lowkey evokes a slithering snake??? If I'm not delusional and it is what they intended, gosh.

I would strongly recomend you check out some encore stages from their concerts. You can see their love for what they do, their love for their fans and their love for each other. Plus you get amazing live vocals and a whole lot of energy while getting to see a bit more of their personalities. The most common encore songs are New Days, Mayday, Silent Night, Wake Up, Can't Get You of My Mind, Reason (which is the lastest fansong), and the newest one's would be Fairytale and We Are Young.

Really great suggestion! I'll have to check those out since we have some time before the end of the month!
