QUEENDOM CHALLENGE 1 ANALYSIS

My personal favourites from this round were I-DLE and AOA honestly for similar but contrasting reasons? I-DLE did the best revamp I think and made LATATA feel different without changing it too much, whereas AOA just took Miniskirt and dialled it up from 10 to 11. Both approaches were very well-executed! I loved Mamamoo's charisma, the choir reveal with Park Bom's stage gagged me fr fr, and Lovelyz and Oh My Girl all did a great job but weren't transformative enough (to me). With sexy concepts, I get you. 😭 Now, personally I love them but enthusiastic and mature artist participation is a must for me and that's not easy to find in any mainstream music scene since so much rides on market appeal and money. AOA's management are just baseline shady in that regard, considering how they managed and marketed the idols when they were still super young and rookies to boot. That said, I still can't help but enjoy this stage (barring some camerawork 😭) because the artists themselves (with more experience under their belt now) seemed to be feeling this and I don't like operating from suspicions of shady dealings and pressure coming from the background when there are no specific signs pointing to it. I also just can't imagine how they danced in those shoes. PS: The Soyeon licks. 🤣 She does do that a lot. It will peak and pay off in a comeback after Queendom though. 🤫 Joke aside though, she is just a very dominant presence on stage. I mean dominant not as in suppressive of other people on stage but dominating towards the *viewer* - the sly smirks, the licks, the eyebrows, the attitude, etc. I commented waaaaaaaay back when (maybe even on Youtube) about why I think male idols can be favoured more over female idols in terms of powerful dance performance and brought up the different expectations they are operating under. In aggregate, female idols are expected to still look a specific kind of pretty and I still believe that can sometimes hinder a full-bodied completely-in-it performance. Male idols are also obviously still expected to look handsome but at the same time going *berserk* and super athletic can still be considered super attractive to the audience so I think they can get away with it a bit more. (And of course, all of this ends up requiring idols' bodies to look specific ways and they can hardly get away with any of it if they look outside of that but that's a whole other, equally important topic. Neither party has it easier in general and most of their struggles are the same, they just differ in the finer points.) All of that to say, I always feel attracted to Soyeon's stage presence because it feels like she eschews that looking-pretty requirement completely. It's a very subtle thing so I always feel like I'm wearing a tinfoil hat when trying to explain it 😭 Basically, honestly, she is super beautiful imo but that's not what this is about. It's more about her not being afraid to throw her entire body around and twisting into different shapes without worrying about having a model/runway type of pose and not being afraid to be suuuuper expressive with her face regardless of it distorting her looks. I think this lack of hindrance is definitely making her a stellar performer in general. I really wonder sometimes how much of it is due to her early industry experiences. Basically, she was always recognized for her talents (be it singing, composing, rapping) but before she debuted with I-DLE (basically, her pre-debut and the beginning years of her solo debut before I-DLE) and I-DLE became a hit, basically most of that praise was accompanied with how "unpretty" she is. Hell, before and even right after she signed to CUBE, people were "lamenting" (read: just being haters, I doubt anyone who makes a point about this wrt a TEENAGER is doing it in good faith) about how she had no chance in the industry because of her looks no matter what skills she obviously had. If I was a performer, aware of my talents and as hardworking and hungry for this as Soyeon seemed to be, I'd also never try looking pretty at that point and lean my efforts in the opposite direction. 🤷‍♀️ (BTW, note-note: I don't consider this a "being authentic vs. conforming" thing so I don't mean to imply what I describe Soyeon as doing is a more "honest" way to perform or whatever. That's a different can of worms and I find plenty of "pretty" performances just as compelling as "unhinged" ones. I mean, honestly, just look at performers like JiU and Gahyeon. I think they -and Soojin from I-DLE specifically- make the best comparison in having unholy levels of strong and expressive stage presence while fully staying in the "make pretty poses and faces" lane. Pretty doesn't have to mean muted. No one can argue to me that Gahyeon doesn't serve face. 😂 I'd by no means diminish one style against the other - both require skilled precision to pull off.)

To add to your rant? Everyone was so bent on Soyeon being “unpretty” that CUBE had her participate in Unpretty Rapstar. I think a big part of her being able to lean into the more unflattering or bizarre aspects of the concepts or movements is that she never half asses anything when it comes to her work. She is very intentional when it comes to how she presents herself and (G)I-dle.

Both of you guys are incredible with your perspectives and insight! I can't believe people thought Soyeon was ugly because she is SO PRETTY omg haha... Like COME ON... It's about as ridiculous as the "idols aren't dancers" narrative at this point.... Completely agree with you guys on how the system tailors to specific stereotypes of how idols should look especially with movement quality, but something I've very clearly been seeing with Gen 5 and CB of Gen 4 and 3 respectively is we are moving away from some of these stereotypes and trying other avenues! It takes a village not just with each group but fandoms and groups coming together for a common cause of celebrating music and the art of dance! I hope that one day I would be considered a "safe haven" for all fandoms to come and learn about dance with their favorite groups with no assumption that I'm viewing a group in a particular biased way over another...... I'll start with that mission with the newest season of Kingdom haha
