Loved the analysis as always! I think I've said this before but Afro is the style I'm most experienced in but I have actually participated and been involved with Step for a few years too, not nearly enough to be considered a professional but it is something I grew up watching and connecting with my community through it. I'm not mad at the dance break at all, I can appreciate the intention behind it and the boldness behind trying it, but I have definitely always assumed that whomever choreographed/directed that section doesn't have much experience in the style 😅. It's like almost there but I've always personally wanted more from it (more shouting, projection of power, more use of the lower body, more clapping, more commitment in the posture) but I also understand that it's not really meant to be a 'Step' section and more like there's an influence. I actually think the dance break is a bit too short to fully realize a Step section with music, I would have actually appreciated it more if they dropped the music out entirely and created the bass beats with the stepping itself, or extended it slightly longer so they could build up the energy more or had room for more combos, but that's just if they really wanted to go there with it, which doesn't seem to have been the intention, but that's actually a nitpick I have for a lot of choreography that includes Step or a Step influence, it's tricky to represent in an authentic way without the absence of music and pausing for chanting/spoken word. I find marching band or other heavy percussive instrumentation feels the most satisfying to me if it's going to be accompanied by music. But again, I'm no expert, just a dabbler and I can totally see why there's a lot of fanfare around this choreo and I like the dance break for the most part but if she were to return to trying out the style, I'd want the team to really build on the basics here (these are beginner level steps as far as execution imo, which makes sense) and go for it. Sorry for another essay, thanks again for the reaction!

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective here!! YES to all points made with more Step intention if they are going to do it haha! I agree 100% that either a marching band percussion or dropping out the beat more would have made it more of that "authentic" effort compared to what is currently at... I hope she gives this style another try or we see it again in some capacity within Kpop because I love the exposure of the style!

Ah yes the long wait for the Querencia album. I don't know if you noticed but Stay Tonight, Play, Dream of You, and X (kinda) are all pre-releases for the Querencia album, which I think contributed to her being overworked since she had mvs for all of them and promoted Play in music shows for a while. She was dying to come out with a full-length album but things kept being postponed and these, among other things, were the first signs I think we got that MNH wasn't as invested in promoting Chungha properly as before.

That's what I was starting to pick up on! Blackpink I think was experiencing similarities with their time under YG hence the activeness of Jennie after she left.. VERY excited to see more from Chung Ha now that she has more creative freedom!
