I finished the draft of the first chapter in November, showed it to my brother and watched his reactions go from mild engagement to apathy as the chapter went on. Decided from there I'd better just redo it rather than subject Fanbox supporters to a boring story; if the people I trust to make my story better only finish it out of courtesy, then it's not good enough yet.

So, I need to practice comics! That includes broader artistic skills like composition and clarity, but also more comic-specific things such as storytelling and panel flow, and keeping tension for 50 pages.

Because the best way to learn that stuff is to do it, I'm going to need to read some really good manga. Already picked up Berserk, but do any of you have recommendations? What are the best manga you know of that could stand to be emulated?

Goblin Slayer (both the main manga and the "year one" addition) is one that comes to mind. Still I like your own storytelling, what we have seen of it.

I would recommend the Chainsaw man manga for paneling purposes, Fujimoto is very good at what he does (check out his 2 oneshots as well). Frieren at the funeral might also be a good manga to check out. It has great paneling for slow moments.

One Piece has a lot to learn from in terms of building a living world that feels interconnected and moves along without just relying on the main cast.
