【Story】

「助けてくれたお礼に、本当の姿を見せてあげる」

　どこかの国の山嶺に、いにしえの邪神復活を目論む秘密教団のアジトがあった。この秘密教団は、超常現象とも呼ぶべき秘術を扱うことに長けていた。教団の聖女のヒーリング能力目当てで入団する信徒は多いが、とりわけ信徒が円陣を囲って執り行われる召喚の儀は秘儀中の秘儀とされており秘匿されていた。なぜならこれまで多大な人的犠牲を払いつつも長年の実験により、実際に異世界から人間やモンスターを召喚することに成功していたからである。

　秘術で召喚されたモンスターは人を襲う習性があることから、教団が用意した隔離施設に収容されて、実験に利用される一方で、召喚された人間は教団の信徒として新たな秘術の研究に動員されるといったスキームが構築されていた。

　リスクは高いが召喚の儀の研究が進めば、邪神の復活も夢物語ではない。「邪神復活の時は近い」と信徒の誰しもが信じていた。こうして、全て事が上手く運んでいるかのように見えていたが、最近になって信徒が別の信徒に殺害される事件が多発。実は召喚された人間の中には人間に擬態するモンスターが紛れていたことが判明した。そのため、教団は施設にいる信徒全員の身体検査を行うことになっていた。

「ここまで来ればもう大丈夫だよ」

　教団のアジトからほど近い森の中で、教団の信徒である青年が少女に話しかける。青年は目の前にいる少女の頼みで教団の施設から二人で逃げ出してきたのだ。少女は異世界から召喚された一人だ。彼女はモンスターについて造詣が深く、とても愛嬌があって可愛らしく振る舞う姿から、多くの信徒たちから人気があった。そんな高嶺の花とまで言われた少女の世話役兼教育係を任された青年は彼女に一目惚れしてしまい、それ以来、彼女の言いなりになっていた。

　近いうちに信徒に対して身体検査を行うと少女が青年から聞かされたとき、少女はこれからどうするか考えた。少女は高度な擬態能力を有していたため、人間の女に完璧に擬態することは造作もなかったが、検査内容次第では正体がばれてしまうことを恐れた。もしも検査の結果、人間ではないことが発覚したら、例え人に危害を加えるつもりがなくても隔離施設に送られて実験の材料とされてしまうのは想像に難くない。そこで少女は一計を案じることにした。青年に「自分には変身能力があり、もし身体検査で能力が露見されてしまったら実験の材料にされてしまうかもしれない」と相談したのだ。それからというもの、彼らが施設を脱出するのは容易だった。少女は青年の助力を得て教団の幹部の一人に擬態し、門番を騙して青年と共に施設外に脱出、この森まで辿り着いたのだった。

　少女は青年の言葉を聞いて思案する。もう大丈夫、か。そうだ、確かにここまで来ればこの男に用はない。それならば最期にからかってやるか。少女は青年にむけって笑顔を向け、着ているシャツをたくしあげる。

「助けてくれたお礼に、私の本当の姿を先生に見せてあげる」

　藪を背にして、少女が「クスクス」と笑いながら背筋を伸ばす。最初は可愛らしい笑みを浮かべていた彼女の顔が、段々と別人の顔に、そして狂気を帯びた笑いへと変わる。彼女の髪はいつしかまるでメデューサのような毒々しい色味を帯びた触手へと代わる。　“ブチュ、グチュグチュ” と臓器が押し潰されるような気味悪い音を立てながら、先ほどまで華奢だった彼女の体は次第に触手の一部へと変わっていき、その触手も束なってやがて不気味な丸い肉塊へと変化した。美しかった彼女の顔はもはや見る影もなく、今や触手の模様の一部となり、肉塊の中へと消えてしまった。

　腫瘍の卵のような、そして臓物をぶちまけたかのような大きな肉塊へと驚くべき変貌を遂げた彼女を前にして青年は腰を抜かしていた。やがて肉塊から大きな丸い目と牙のようなものが生えた。目の前の化け物は、臭く腐ったような息を吐き出しながら青年に話しかける。

「ゲハッ…これが施設から抜け出せた礼だ。俺は変身能力があるとは言ったが、まさか人間だと思っていたのか？　お前が想像していた姿と違って残念だったな。　では最期に死に方を選ばせてやろう。この巨体で押し潰されるか、この牙で食いちぎられるか、どちらを望む？」

　はは、冗談だろ…これが君の本当の姿なのか？高嶺の花なんて摘むんじゃなかったな。でも俺はまだまだ死にたくない。こうなったら仕方がない。

「おい、俺を殺すということは考えるな。俺を生かしておけばお前がこの世界で生き抜く方法を教えてやるぞ。　そもそも、お前はろくにこの世界の文字を読めないじゃないか。文字が読めなかったらこれから人間に擬態して生活するのはきついぞ？」

「ゲハハハハ…！　ん、そうなのか？」

「ああ、それに先ほど、大丈夫だと言ったのは、あくまで俺がいる場合での話だ、この森の先にも教団の警戒網が存在するし、今頃は俺たちが脱出したこともバレているだろう」

「では、どうすればいいんだ。回答次第ではお前を生かしておいてやることもない」

「教団の聖女に擬態しろ。お前に擬態能力があることはまだ知られていないはずだ。ここから先、もしも教団に見つかったら、俺に脅されたフリをするんだ。そして隙をついて奴らの車を奪って逃走する」

「…ほう、中々面白い男だ。俺がモンスターと知って、なお協力を持ちかけて来るとは。いいだろう。お前の話に乗ってやる」

　おぞましい化け物が激しく活動を再開する。目玉の部分から触手が飛び出たと思いきや、そこから人間の頭部が形成されていく。肉塊が触手へと化け、そこからさらに手足へと変化させていく。舌を大きく突き出したセーラー服の少女（施設にいた少女の一人だ）の姿に化けたと思いきや、さらに姿を変化させて、胸の大きなリボンが特徴的なドレスを着た美しい聖女の姿となった。

「それでは、これからもこの世界のこと、沢山教えてくださいな、先生」

　聖女に擬態した少女は、可愛らしい胸を恥ずかしげもなく露出させ、ニタリと笑った。
