Hey all, Scriptor here with the latest newssss!

Technical issues

The start of this week was one burning pile of technical difficulties. First on Monday one of my SSD inside the computer kicks the bucket (the one with all the No escape files), making me switch it out with a new one and pumping over all the data between the two (600GB). Luckily it seems that no files got corrupted, but nonetheless I’m glad that every month or so I make a backup of that internal SSD to on an external SSD drive… Motherboard also seems OK so there was probably(?) something wrong in the SSD itself, which made it malfunction inside my computer (once I took it out and connected it through a cable with my computer it worked fine again). Still I’m not taking any risks, and the new SSD was due to be plugged in the computer anyways so I’ll use the old SSD as a non-vital external storage drive from now on. Big scare all-around; but luckily it ends with a sizzler (much like my previous SSD hah!)

Yesterday I continued my work on No escape and was done setting up the flashback scene… only to find out it’s too heavy for my GPU to render. Now this isn’t something unusual; and the normal way to deal with this is cutting down on memory usage within the scene. In a nutshell: If I cut down on texture sizes/mesh sizes inside the scene I usually can render it just fine, at the trade-off of the environment being less detailed/look a bit worse quality-wise. That said, last week I’ve ordered a new (strong) GPU which will easily be able to render the flashback scene. It’s due to arrive somewhere this week, so I’m just going to hold off on rendering the flashback images until it’s in. ;3

Game development

Alright, now despite the above technical difficulties I did manage to wrap up the remaining iron maiden scenes, and also have everything ready to start working on the flashback scenes. As stated above I’ll hold off on making those images until the new GPU is in, but that just means I’ll do some shuffling in my schedule and start modeling the stuff for the first upcoming fail-state today… the one which will see a fed-up S.O.P.H.I.A. turn Kat into a “living server bank”. >;3

As with the boss’s side quest in the pyramid Kathleen will have ample chances to mess up every task given to her by the factory’s A.I., and S.O.P.H.I.A. has just as little tolerance for useless girls as Goddess has… Luckily even total failures can be made useful with the right equipment, as Kathleen will find out during this fail-state!

First teasers of this fail-state (as well as from the flash-back scenes) are planned for this Sunday. If the new GPU hasn’t arrived yet this won’t be an issue for the fail-state since it’s a lot less resource heavy; the old GPU will (likely) be able to render those fail-state images just fine. ^^

Teasers

Kathleen: “No way in hell I’m going to spend another night inside that pod!”

Security drone: “….”

Kathleen: “… Goddamnit.”

That’s all for this dev update, have a good remainder of the week and catch you guys Sunday! ;3

I only have a sample size of one (me) so don't take this too seriously, but I too had problems with SSDs recently. Three of them "died" consecutively and were replaced, then my PC started randomly bluescreening and I was forced to buy a new CPU. Turned out to be a dying PSU in the end. Well, at least I have a new PC, basically. XD Turns out the new NVME SSDs are really sensitive to voltage spikes. If this is your problem as well, new stronger GPU will most certainly speed the process of your PSU dying up so I guess that's a good thing. Backup regularly. On the other hand, with work like yours you could have just driven that SSD into the ground, of course. Rendering is quite taxing on hardware. Good luck! Hopefully it goes well from here.

Really appreciate the heads-up; PSU issues aren't far fetched especially since between rendering and working on stuff the computer is often running all-nighters... It's a good thing I've got a fresh powerblock here as well; that's gonna be hooked up once the new GPU arrives. Let's hope that will be the end of it (for the coming few months at least). 💪💯

I'm supeer paranoid and back up my files one every 1-2 months, on to two different backup drives, in two completely different locations. Just in case some kind of a disaster struck not only my computer but one of the two locations entirely.

Scriptor

Yeah either that or online storage; but that's what I'm super paranoid for. Maybe I should just invest in a water-/fireproof floor safe... could even write it off as a business expense lol! 😅🐱‍👤

@Scriptor From what I understand, you you SSDs as your backup drives. So you don't have to go for a nuclear-hardened zip drive right away. For you, a big improvement would be just to use a normal HDD. : SSDs are terrible long term storage device for multiple reasons. For example they are usually not in a metal case. If an SSD is just lying somewhere outside the PC case, it will get wiped by simple lightning strike near you or by a crappy arc welder your neighbour bought on eBay. XD

Another good heads-up; in that case time to visit the computer shop again. 😅😉💯
