ALRAUNE German for Mandrake is a novel by German novelist Hanns Heins Ewers published in 1911. It is also the name of the female lead character. The book originally featured illustrations by Ilna Ewers-Wunderwald. Ah, it is the Wikipedia entry. Hm.

ALRAUNE A creature from Middle Age German mythology. The humanoid-shaped mandrake root, or Mandragora officinarum, was widely believed to be produced by the Earth absorbing the life force of hanged criminals. In modern pop culture, the Alraune is commonly portrayed as a mandrake plant-human hybrid being, usually seen as female.
