Excerpt from 'A Guide to Magical Womenfolk and their Uses' (1873) If you should awaken in the night and find your furniture inappropriately stacked, you may be tempted to take a belt to your bonny housemaid. Consider, however, that this may be the work of a ghost woman. These rambunctious revenants make their home in old buildings and amuse themselves by playing jokes on the living. Evidently, they must be tamed. (Also a preview of the second part where ghost taming methods are discussed.)
