Hello everybody!

It's Jané here.


I haven't been getting enough sleep lately and my body is suffering. That's mostly because of my computer malfunction, which I've been staying up late to maintain. It's the worst thing that can happen to an electronic device to defy its owner. My baby is too naughty.


Well, I've now published English translations of some of the stories for you English speakers to enjoy!

These stories are mainly based on the Japanese view of life and death and horror literature. In addition, the unique Japanese way of life and rules also appear.


That's why... the English translation was quite difficult. Where I translated a line and it didn't feel right, I replaced it with a completely different line or something. Jokes that only Japanese people would understand, for example.


If I had to mention a cultural difference, in Japan, students often wear school uniforms from junior high school. Besides, 7th grade is the 1st year of junior high school for Japanese students. In the first place, we don't say 7th grade.


At school, classmates only call each other by their first names if they are very close. Most of them use last names or nicknames.


When teachers call students, last names are also common, while students call their homeroom teachers "Sensei". The only time you call someone by their first name, such as Kakashi sensei, is when there is more than one person in the room and you want to distinguish between them.


Japanese is written vertically, but English is written horizontally. Sometimes the size of the speech bubble is also an obstacle...


Oh, and as a basic premise, the Japanese language is such that even if there is no subject, it is somehow possible to tell who is talking to whom and who is talking about whom. So I first correct it into super-polite Japanese and then input it into DeepL, and then I rework the translated English myself.

Also, the inability to reproduce the unique Japanese dialect in English might make it a little difficult to convey the feeling. It's called 'Hogen'.


What do the following Japanese anime characters have in common?


Heiji Hattori (Detective Conan)

Cerberus (Cardcaptor Sakura)

Touji Suzuhara (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Taishiro Toyomitsu(My Hero Academia)


The answer is that they use the Japanese Kansai dialect(Osaka dialect).

In my story, this applies to 'Ho-chan', 'Rin-chan's father' and 'all of Rin-chan's relatives', but I could not express the difference in the way they speak when translating the story into English.


But even without that, thanks to the cultural differences, the oriental worldview and setting alone might be unusual enough atmosphere for English speakers. To me, everyone abroad looks like a character from a Hollywood film.

By the way, how did you spend your 31 October?

I've never experienced a Halloween-like event. There are hardly any Halloween events in Japan to begin with, though. There are only more police in Tokyo thanks to people walking around in costume at night.


So I had planned to stay home and do a Halloween-inspired post this year, but thanks to the aforementioned problems I was unable to carry it out.


The one that was supposed to be published on 31 October will be published at some point in the future. And of course the English version. So, please wait for it!

I think you have a very good understanding of the differences between Japanese and English, as well as a high level of English proficiancy! For the most part, your translations are very easy to understand, with only an occasional odd line that seems strange to a native English speaker. And you navigate the cultural differences very well. As for the Kansai-ben issue, anime often gives them a Texan accent when translated to English. But I think that would be difficult for you to express in writing! If you want to experience a Japanese Halloween, please come to Osaka! There is a big event here every year! Thank you, as always, for all your hard work.
