Thank you! It mostly comes from experience, I'm originally a traditional painter and have done a lot of paintings in many lighting scenarios. The most important thing about lighting is that it should serve the reading of the image in your desired way. If for example what you're interested in your project is the overall silhouette of a character, make it so that it detaches from the back! If you're trying to paint a delicate face, you can make the eyes stand out more by silencing the amount of noise around it by using a softer light, etc. Think like a movie photographer, design the light to your needs!
