今回のすずきあきら先生のWW1兵器名鑑のテーマはフランスの戦艦ブーヴェです。

この時代のフランス戦艦はタンブル・ホームと呼ばれるヤカンのような形をしています。

宮崎駿監督もこの時代のフランス戦艦がお好きなのか、アニメではよくこのぼってりした形の軍艦が登場します。

フランスの装甲艦は19世紀の終わり頃から登場します。

19世紀半ばには転炉が発明され、鉄鋼生産量が増大していきます。さらに、鉄の中に含まれる炭素の量もコントロールできるようになり、質の高い鋼が生産できるようになっていました。

19世紀末のフランス戦艦はその試行錯誤のせいかユニークなデザインの戦艦がいろいろ登場します。装甲艦オッシュは沿岸防衛用という性格もあって乾舷が低く、上部構造物の高さが際立ちます。艦首から艦尾につながる渡り廊下も非常にユニークです。

ところで、装甲艦とはいってもすべて鋼鉄で装甲されていたわけではありません。

重点的に守らねばならないバーベット付近の装甲は鋼板とチーク材の装甲層で分厚く守られています。すべて鋼板で覆いたいところですが、分厚い鋼板を切削したり結合したりすることはまだまだ難しく、木材のほうが加工が容易で弾力性もあります。これで砲弾を防ぐことができると考えられていました。
