+Resource+ Swatches, Plus Colouring / Shading Tips

A set of tones for Photoshop, that I use for shading and basic colouring.
Most other colours I use for characters are from official texture files / reference sheets, and for backgrounds, I mostly use whatever's in Photoshop's default palettes.
Due to my colourblindness, I need a one-size-fits-all solution. This is my method, using 50% grey that's been slightly edited for each tone I could need.

Tips:

  • I do shading and lighting on separate layers to the base colour.
  • Out of sheer habit, most increments I set for things are 0-15-24-33-50-66-85-100.
  • Unless otherwise necessary, I do all white surfaces (including sclerae and teeth) with the Material White swatch.
  • For soft surfaces like skin, I normally set shading layers to 33% Multiply and lighting layers to 50% Screen.
  • For matte surfaces like clothes, I normally set shading layers to 50% Multiply and 66% Screen.
  • For glossy surfaces like plastic or metal, I normally set shading layers to 66% Linear Burn and lighting layers to 66% Linear Dodge, have the shading layer glow faintly white, and have the lighting layer glow faintly black.
  • For soles of feet and palms of hands, I use the skin shading tone set to Multiply, usually at 15-24%. For darker skin, I do the same but with Screen.
  • For natural blush that appears on cheeks / joints, I use the Red-Pink shading tone set to Multiply at roughly 15%, along with a very faint, blurry dot using the Red-Pink shading tone set to Screen at about 33-66%.
  • For eye glints, I use a white dot set to 85% opacity, and have it glow faintly with white adjusted slightly to the eye's colour.
  • When shading sclerae, I use a 50% Grey and reduce its opacity as needed, usually no more than 33%.
  • For lips and nipples, I normally use the Mouth tone set to Multiply, and adjust the opacity accordingly.
  • For scars, I do the same as lips and nipples, but with Screen instead.
