Spike wasn't expecting to do much in the castle while Twilight and Starlight were up in Canterlot. However, that all changed when Rarity rushed into the castle in a panic. She had taken a potion at Zecora's, which was meant to make her thinner and younger; unfortunately, she ended up with the exact opposite effects due to consuming the potion the wrong way. Now she needs a rather... unexpected method to reverse the potion's effects. And as luck would have it, Spike was more than willing to help.
