Meliodas the Dragon's Sin of Wrath Diane the Serpent's Sin of Envy Ban the Fox's Sin of Greed King the Bear's Sin of Sloth Gowther the Goat's Sin of Lust Merlin the [REDACTED]'s Sin of [REDACTED] Escanor the [REDACTED]'s Sin of [REDACTED] So there's all 7 members of the Seven Deadly Sins, the only members with known sins, and former knights that once served as the kingdom's strongest order of knights, but were ultimately betrayed by Hendrickson and Dreyfus, 2 Assistant Holy Knight Captains that killed Dreyfus's older brother, Zaratras, whose also the father of Gilthunder, and then placed the murder charges on the Seven Deadly Sins. And this all happened 10 years ago

Hawk and Mama Hawk are basically just familiars of Meliodas, and they haven't been around Meliodas long enough to meet all the Sins, so the journey to find each one is a brand new experience for both of them.

New Generation Holy Knights are individuals that did not have enough strength or skill to become full-fledged Holy Knights, so they were (formerly) known as Holy Knight Apprentices that drank the blood of a Red Demon, the very same one that Ban fought and killed several years prior in the Forest of the Fairy King, where Elaine (King's Sister) had died and Ban had (unwillingly) obtained immortality. If the Holy Knight Apprentices were not strong enough to withstand the power of the Red Demon's blood, it went on a rampage and caused them to implode.

Fairy Clan, Human Clan, Giant Clan, Goddess Clan, and Demon Clan are the most notable clans in this world, although there are far more "Lesser" Clans out there, most are just grouped into 1 of the 5 Main Clans, so they don't receive as much attention.

3000 years ago, the Demon Clan and Goddess Clan waged war upon each other and dragged the other 3 Clans into the fight, but what's most important is that the Demon Clan has been sealed and the Goddess Clan has sort-of been sealed as well, but mostly because of their own injuries required full retreat into their own realm. Coffin of the Eternal Darkness is an item that can break the seal upon the Demon Clan, and it seems that the handle of Meliodas's former sword is an important item. Of course the seal has been slightly weakening over the years, hence the fact a Red Demon was able to escape from the Demon World/Realm.

Oh yeah, final note, but the King and the Princesses have been apprehended by Hendrickson and Dreyfus, so the Holy Knights control the Kingdom of Liones atm, but Veronica slipped out to find Elizabeth, Margaret's imprisoned, King Baltra was placed under permanent house arrest, and Elizabeth broke free first to track down the Sins. So it became a puppet state, with the 2 Chief Holy Knights spreading false knowledge about the Sins' "Betrayal" throughout the Kingdom for many years, hence the reason so many people wholeheartedly believe they're evil and traitors, cause that's what they were taught for 10ish years.
