While drugged food IS a concern, I'd be more worried about incompatible food considering this is an alien planet. Pretty sure you have guessed by now, considering this episode, Hathor and Daniel's comment to Jack about Sam kissing him without his consent in Broca Devide. But yeah, as much as I love this show, they don't seem to understand what rape is. Their treatment of it is a bit disgusting. In Kynthia's defence tho, she's a child (literally) and doesn't actually know better. The problem is with his reaction and the one of the team. They didn't seem to see anything wrong with it. At the very least, I wish he had ask her to keep her distances or the team do it and protect him. But no, instead the show had them have a thing for the rest of the episode. So no, you are not too harsh, I hate it too.

As a man...I appreciate that you don't appreciate that they just seemed to gloss over the whole incident. Though, from Kynthia's point of view it was consensual. It was their custom, the way they did things and if someone accepted the marriage cake then they consented because they knew what they were doing. This of course does not mitigate the fact of what it was...because Jack had no clue about their "customs" so he did not give consent. I think however, based on the fact of how he looked at her BEFORE he was given the cake, that had he been allowed proper consent that he would have consented. I could be wrong though!

I found this a Very silly episode. Pretty weak on execution and writing, IMO. It doesn't age well. Felt like an OG Star Trek episode. So much didn't make sense. Wasn't explained. Just a silly filler episode. The whole drugged sex thing is likely a sign of the times,, when it was thought that a guy wouldn't have the same issues with that situation as a woman would. I do think they also took advantage of the cultural issue here. That it was part of their culture and O'Neil would understand that. But I get you about it being wrong and should have been addressed. It is typical of that time though.

Jack made the mistake of admiring Kynthia, as most men would. She reacted as her traditions dictated. It really was on Carter and Daniel, who should have stopped him from being taken away after the ceremony and having consumed a drug likely intended to insure the continuance of the colony.. Still, I tend to believe Jack gently explained to Knythia, her ways were not his during their time together

I actually *really* like this episode. It's just so optimistic, like an old Star trek episode. Yes, the culture clash does result in Jack getting roofied, but they do discuss that several times, especially in the "marriage cake" discussion he has with Cynthia. To her, consent was when he accepted the cake. There was no ill-intent on her part, she was acting according to her customs, and I don't think he was opposed to having sex with her so much as he wouldn't have because of propriety and the health risk. He acknowledges that she drugged him, but he doesn't hold it against her. In the end there are no hard feeling and everyone's lives have been improved. The message to love and appreciate every day that's given to you is a beautiful one.

There was zero intent to assault from Kynthia. This was an innocent mistake. Imagine a five year old boy grabbing a woman's breast out of interest. Is that an assault? Some customs conflict with other culture's customs. In the west it's normal and expected to do an autopsy on a murder victim; in some parts of the world attempting to cut a dead body would be similar to defecating on it. It's ALL about intent.

Scarlett Monrow

To be fair, Jack was free to ask questions and he didn't. "why the cake only for me?", "what does it mean in your culture?"

Scarlett Monrow

I don't think it's fair to compare Sam's situation in "Emancipation" and Jack's in this episode. Kynthia had ZERO intent to assault him. In fact, by all she knew, she was doing a good thing. Today people overreact and pick at things and forget that INTENT is crucial. There was no rape, just a bad misunderstanding. Jack was free to ask questions before eating and he didn't (why is the cake only for me; what does it mean).

Michele

I don't disagree with that - not fully. But we really don't know for sure that drugging the male is common form there. Regardless of that, it would be expected that O'Neil would have an issue with it, even if he knew it was in their culture. It's not His culture, so he's would be perfectly within his right to take issue with it.

Zoot!

I wonder what actually happens when you take a group of people that typically lives for 100 days, and suddenly overnight give them a normal human lifespan. Like take one tiny factor - now babies need more diapers. Which means you need more cloth to make them. Which also means you need to wash a lot more diapers. Which means suddenly your small population has to devote all their time to diaper maintenance. Frankly I'd expect these people to go extinct within a generation.

Beasty

Yeah if you roofie a girl and rape her you still going to say that she should have asked questions

Beasty

I’m sure that’s what every rapist says. I don’t care what her intentions were or are at the end of the day Jack got raped

Scarlett Monrow

When you stop caring about intentions, you stop caring about fairness and justice. Not a good thing... Because that means you hate someone/something based on simple emotions and not logical reasoning.
