I don't know if you've ever heard of Bobby Fischer. He was a child chess prodigy, and Beth is modelled after him. Being able to see games on the ceiling like that is a rare gift. I only know one grand master that does it (Hikaru Nakamura), and its quite impressive to watch in action. Chess isn't all this show is about, but it does feature quite heavily. This show is responsible for a large upswing in chess popularity in the last few years.

Also remember this is happening in late 50’s and 60’s. Lots of stuff back than was really messed up when it came to state run facilities and other things you saw in this episode.
