The GL in this movie is Yalan Gur. He was the GL of sector 2814 in ancient times. In the comics he went power mad and did some bad stuff. This version, it seems, has a different fate.

I just want to say that yes, a lot of those scenes were not necessary in the 2 hours cut, Snyder would have cut a lot of it (tho probably not as much as Whedon did). WB allowed him a longer movie so he chose to put everything he had filmed back then in it. Otherwise, yeah, a lot of the slower scenes would've been cut. Darkseid was always meant to be there in the flashback and have a presence in the movie but Whedon change it to Steppenwolf which doesn't make sense but whatever I guess. Pretty sure it's the same actor for Ares. The Green Lantern is Yalan Gur (pretty sure he's known as the Prehistoric Lantern) and it's sort of thanks to him that the Lanterns are no longer weak to yellow. Also, Hal Jordan and John Stewart were also supposed to be in the movie.

They were coating the boxes with different substances. Thats what was happening in the flashback

Desaad is Darkseid's master torturist. He was in Smallville as a younger version who owned s&m clubs as a front to brainwash people into Darkseid's followers through the strength of their sins

One thing you have to remember is this was filmed in 2017 and then these "newer" scenes were removed before DC went and filmed Aquaman and Wonder Woman 84 etc so those films didn't need to respect the continuity of this cut because there was no plan to release this version at the time.
