Because he grew up Catholic, the nuns of the church he went to took him in instead of the state taking him into the foster system. This is how old school orphanges used to work. The church gets money from the state for it and the children are raised by the church until they are 18 (used to be 14).

Stick’s like your toxic uncle who shows up after god knows how long, takes you on an adventure, and belittles you to the point where you question every aspect of your life. I think he really does care for Matt, but not in a way that could be considered healthy.

I think they are calling him the devil because of how he is acting, violent, punishing evil doers, etc, not due to how he looks. They probably came up with the name "devil" because he is operating in a section of the city called "Hell's Kitchen." Hell, devil, get it?

The guy that plays Stick, Scott Glenn is the ultimate B movie actor. He has been in a ton of stuff but always supporting roles. Kind of like James Remar, who plays Gambi on Black Lightning.
