I think Death put all the soulless memories on the Hell side of the wall because he knew Sam would hate himself for all the things he did and tried to spare him from that. Soulless Sam did tell Dean he did kill innocent people in the year they were apart, now we're seeing one example of that

Death put his Soulless and Hell memories behind a wall. If he keeps trying to remember, the wall will break.

Souless Sam remembers Hell. Everything from the last year is locked away, so it won't trigger memories that would crack the wall.

2021-07-09 12:33:42 Death put up a wall bc Sam's soul was Lucifer and Michael's only source of entertainment in the cage & it would of been in Cas's words "ripped to shreds" so that's why there's a wall and now Sam has hell head(ache🔥🔥)!!!😁👌

To clarify: Sams soul had been in Hell for 1.5 years, but Sam himself (without his soul) was rescued very shortly after going to Hell. He'd been there a whole year before getting back with Dean. This is a hard episode for me to watch. It's pretty dark and sad. The MOW is okay, but it's always hard fore to see Sam like this. It's very honorable of him, though, to push forward and accept the risk so that he can help people and try to correct what he did while wirhout a soul.
