I love the backstory we get for Stefan in this episode. Damn, he was a real bastard with his humanity turned off. They call it having your emotions off, but Stefan was clearly experiencing some emotions because it's not like he was just feeding and not caring who he hurt or killed, he seemed to take great pleasure from making people suffer as much as possible. Damon has some great lines in this episode. "You know you were dreaming about me. Explains the drool." "It came to me in a dream. I was naked, you would have loved it." "I'm shocked! Stefan's not a virgin?" Caroline's father trying to practice "vampire conversion therapy" on her was just horrible. Even giving him the benefit of doubt and assuming he had the best intentions, how could he have possibly thought it would work? Vampires need blood to survive.

Yeah, the whole conversion therapy thing is even weirder because he is supposedly gay himself, right? So he of all people should understand that it cannot possibly work, ever. I do find it interesting that they made the analogy so explicit in this episode, because if you pay attention to the right things, vampirism as a metaphor for homo-/bisexuality works surprisingly consistently throughout the entire show so far, but it's never crossed the line from subtext to text so blatantly before. It also seems to me slightly schizophrenic on the part of the showrunners, because on the surface TVD isn't exactly known for having an especially progressive attitude toward LGBT+ issues, which makes me wonder how much of it is actually intentional at all... Regardless, it's definitely worthwhile to rewatch the show specifically with that reading in mind, because there's a bit more here than meets the eye I think...
