I talk about what I consider to be the 9 most important "taboo" words in Latin. The word "taboo" I put in quotations because most of them weren't particularly taboo in Roman in speech; it was more how they were used which could cause offense (or laughter, in some cases of the literature).

For detailed analysis I recommend:  The Sexual Latin Vocabulary by JN Adams https://archive.org/download/jnadams_collection/J.%20N.%20Adams_JN_The_Latin_Sexual_Vocabulary%20%281982%29.pdf

Be careful also if you attempt to use these words. Latin speakers generally know these words, and could certainly find them offensive (or, hopefully, just risible). Since Latin speakers are native speakers of many languages, a word which carries little taboo in your language may be very strong in another's native language, for which reason caution is vital.

Labor accuratus, gatias tibi ago! In carmine Catulli LVIII verbum "glubo glupsi, gluptus" quid significat bene scimus. At "cunnum permulcere manibus" quomodo dicam Latine?

Great video! It's interesting to see how the Romans had precise words for particular acts and agency/passitivity, it's kind of a parallel with the infinitives varying in tense and voice!

Been a fan of your work for a long time and haven't begun to exhaust all your great free content online... but accessing this "naughty" video was the final the thing that made me finally pony up and sign up to your Patreon! Haha

Despite your concern, this is quite possibly the least offensive thing I've ever seen on the internet 😉. Also very interesting!

You were more careful than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. You seemed so apologetic. I decided to sponsor based on your dropping that bit of 4-1-1 in the Barbarians Latin review. You left "offensive" three counties back.

LukeRanieri

Hahaha that cat would be so cautious! 😸 Yes, I known I have some devout Catholics who support me, so I was worried about crossing a line for them. This first video was an experiment. Perhaps I’ll do more!

So, is there a secret handshake or password to get to the really smutty stuff?

LukeRanieri

Haha! Well, you have the PDF to the book by Adams, which is where I would send you to next.

Thank you for this video. I'm still trying to understand what is offensive in a video explaining words that people used to describe certain action the certain way. That way has an important communicative and expressive function in any language. And, there has to be a context in which it can be offensive.

LukeRanieri

Thank you for saying so! I do know some people who might not want to hear about the topic under any circumstances. I think the video is fine die the general public.

Aaw, I can't see it!
