It just goes to say that whatever anime you watch there's always going to be a person that will hate it or not like it. Complain about its story progression of how slow, quick, and imperfect it is. Even AOT which I think for me is 10/10 for other people it's still lacking something like the "ending", for hxh the "yapping" and hiatus, for one piece the long story 1000+ episodes. The existence of a "Perfect Anime" is impossible unless EVERYONE agrees to it. Every anime reaction channel is critique and think that their opinion is (somehow) "right", but what about the authors that wrote those stories/manga, at least - most - of them in their point of view of creating their own anime for them it's a MASTERPIECE in their own right but for readers and watchers that's something we would never understand because we're just judging we didn't put sweat and brain in that paper, we just judge and think that every anime lacks something. A never ending cycle of dissatisfaction! sad..

When you realize Meruem is so genetically superior, that he doesn’t need to use any Nen to fight Uvo in a hand to hand combat, it puts things in perspective. Netero could probably kill the entire Troupe before they even know what hit them. He’s that guy. There’s just levels.

I'm telling you guys, HxH isn't about fights, it's about character development. If you pay close attention, this whole arc is about the characters, even the antagonists, evolving and changing. This episode in particular is beautiful. "It's way easier to pull the trigger when you are prepared to die", goated line from a goated character!

This is so true, one of HxH's main intent is to subvert expectations and to challenge conventional storytelling tropes. This is why we never really get a lot of crazy fights compared to other shounen anime. However, the major fights we do get serve a distinct purpose and are intricately built upon the characters, their development, and the thematic elements of the show, giving them significantly more weight and impact within the story.

also this arc was the start of the real hxh js. we never got to see the potential tbh in the anime cause they stopped it. There are some good videos that go over the best parts of the manga after the anime stop and they have huge plot points that r mind-blowing so tbh after yall finish that would be a good react

not to mention he's allowing the "worthy" humans to live while eliminating the rest and then says he will use his power to protect the weak. Which is a contradiction since all humans are weaker then him so if he kills any humans technically he's preying on the weak in a sense

One of the reasons why I love this show is the subversion of expectations that blends seamlessly into the story-telling. I remember not too long ago Carter was fussing about how would our team tackle the Royal Guards given the latter are so much superior in strength. Youpi alone managed to almost take out all of the hunters, and he pretty much would have killed everyone, but Togashi gave him a brilliant character development that worked so well for him during his battle with the hunters. Also, going back to the Hunter exam, do you remember what was the final task? One-to-one match wherein you had to make your opponent surrender without killing them. This is exactly what Mereum has to do to Netero, make him surrender without killing to learn his name. Had it just been to kill Netero, I think it would have been a relatively simpler task. But to make someone surrender especially when you have superior strength without killing them is a lot more difficult. I love the full circle back to the Hunter exam!

Well its not always smth we would never understand... Surely episodes of a funny looking octopus that noone can take seriously are not gonna be considered necessary or good by pretty much anyone. So yea sure, we cant always understand the thoughts of the authors but sometimes we dont have to understand them to understand that the work would have been better without X Y Z in the story

Worst thing about this anime, and shonens of past is pacing. This would be so heat if they had a more streamlined story. You can cut at least 20ep if you remove unnecessary explanations, recaps and side stories that are not that important. Still, love this show, this is one of my favorite arcs of all time.

Everything you said just validated my point. What's the point of reading a book if you're just going to skip chapter/pages 3, 6, and 8. Then ask "I don't understand why they didn't elaborate that part" but then Ikalgo's episodes ELABORATED those part and now you're basically like "I wished they didnt showed this part it would've been fine". You can still skip certain borring episodes if you want and try to say it would've been fine if they didn't existed, but remember when it existed that you complained about it because you never tried to understand why it existed why the author put that there. The only thing that mattered to you is "if this episode is going to bore me to death then dont show me" because you only care about the fun stuff. When in reality everyone lives in their boring lives most of their days till the moment they die and they can't complain about it, because they UNDERSTOOD that this is a part of their episodes/story/life/..

Seeing how much they’ve loved this show so far makes me even more hyped for them to experience Naruto Shippuden. If they think the story here is good, I simply can’t wait for them to quite literally fall in love with Shippuden, which aside from the elite fighting, storytelling, world building, character+story layers/depth, and the way in which it all ties together at the end (which is on a level different from any anime they’ve seen and top-tier in anime in general—exceeding Attack on Titan, which I am happy to debate on) Shippuden is itself a story about love and restoring that love.

It's not as noticeable with the benefit of binging now years later, but I can't imagine waiting weekly for one episode. We have it relatively easy getting 4 at a time. And yeah, yeah, delayed gratitude and tiktok brain these days, I get it, but it'd still be a drag to wait a week for 20min of content.

I really don't care for sub/dub debates, I just enjoy what I enjoy, but this entire arc has really good dub performances. I often throw something on while going to sleep so I look for good dubs so I can follow along without watching and I struggle to find an abrasive dub actor in this arc that takes me out of it. Not to suggest you switch to dub here at any point but if any of yall are interested in a rewatch I'd recommend giving this arc specifically a try, even Gon's jan-ken chant changes and is less cringe I believe.

SPOILERS WARNING— I know the last arc is controversial and hit-or-miss for some ppl but personally I love the reincarnation idea, it truly does make the story tie together for me in so many ways. I mean you could write endlessly about the character/story relations, there are just so many links between morals, characters, story. And a lot of it does focus around creating a world of love, so much so that it has been a driving force of both action and conflict for generations. The links you can find in Shippuden are something that just don’t exist in HxH

Yeah those are my favorites too. Unless for the Marineford. I especially liked Whole Cake Island and Dressrosa had my second favorite character in it. But what makes your and Jack's statements irrelevant are the episode ratings. While Whole Cake and Dressrosa got about 30 9.0+ episodes, the whole 33 episodes of Marineford had 31 9.0+ ratings.

Lol this is exactly what I did, the pain waiting weekly for each episode, from ep 122 to 123... I even wrote blogs so people would watch the series. HxH was underrated back then if you can believe that. Also on a side note - no, cutting 20 episodes (even if they are slow) is a ridiculous statement. Not to forget the best of hxh is the slow thought-provoking storytelling it so well excels. Ikalgo's journey as well as Plam's and especially the conclusion to Welfin are some of the best the show has to offer and could not be done without granted slow but subtle buildup. Well tbf my fav anime is about 7 kids in prison so that could just be me then.

I’m not saying I don’t love Marineford. I do. It is peak One Piece, especially pre time skip. However, I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to discredit the fact that Dressrosa and Whole Cake also have really great ratings especially when you factor in the fact that they have three times the number of episodes. I mean I was used to that before, thanks to Naruto and Bleach, but now I hate it. It is so annoying too, some great scene is happening, and then boom here is an episode with the octo dude. Maybe 20 ep is too much, but you guys get my point. Narration, and recaps, and scene skipping slowed this show so much. In the end it is still GOATed, but these are my little gripes.

Meh, HxH is pro at edging the viewers with fights in this arc XD The whole time you want more of Meruem vs Netero or Gon and Pitou and they keep cutting away... Not that the fights they cut to are necessarily bad, they're just less hyped than those main matches we've been waiting for forever

^ this is a perfect example of how our opinions on media consumption have changed over time. Nowadays, it's all about ADHD/TikTok brain (like the first comment mentioned) and that things have to be CONSTANTLY happening and happening fast. It's really an interesting phenomenon. Perhaps it's just that people are more critical of their own time. I personally don't believe much of this arc could be cut down, especially 20 episodes worth lol, but with the shift in pacing of recent anime/manga, it's made a lot of people turn to dislike slower paced stories that take more time to spend on characters, storyline, or world more.

Yeah there's definitely a problem of needing things to constantly happen, but it doesn't necessarily excuse repetitive or over-indulgent introspection scenes. It's one piece of (good) Western media I still prefer to anime. A lot can be said very effectively without cutting to a character's internal thoughts. My favorite shows (Better Call Saul, early GoT...) are incredibly slow and masters of subtlety and show-don't-tell. It's only a very slight problem in HxH as far as I'm concerned, but more so of anime like Naruto, which I still love to death but it is ROUGH sometimes. Not to mention anime has the benefit of every little detail in the animation being deliberately drawn/animated, meaning the animators can be deliberate with every character's movement or expression.

I love slow pacing shows, and movies, as much as I like watching action. But when it is done with intention. Just padding time by showing the same conversation from 4 different angles is not a good storytelling anymore. We outgrew that cliché 10 years ago. Also, I would agree that taste changed with time, I do not have much free time anymore, and I love when show respects that. I can watch LOTR extended edition every time, bc all the scenes carry something important that adds to the experience, but filler adds nothing. I used to say that fillers make characters more interesting, since you have more time with them, but now I realize it is just a cheap method of extending the show (This part does not apply to HxH, they don't have fillers, they do OP thing where episode that should last 15min lasts 20 )

Yeah that's why the writing in the show is peak,most didn't like Welfin before this but the narrator saying he spent his life unable to trust himself or others melted me.
