bless you for reacting to this heart-wrenching yet absolutely beautiful movie 🫶🏻

damn im so happy yall reacted to this, my favorite anime movie of all time! Very sad fact about this movie, the studio that made it got attacked by a mentally ill person accusing them of stealing his script(this movie) and then caused a fire that killed 40+ people in the studio. Very fucked up situation

ssj4rit

Some great popcorn asmr to brighten a Sunday.

THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS

Dude Man McGee

I have a feeling this one's gonna get me crying, I've only heard things about it.

Cristian

Wwwwwww

humbleandkindness

I’ve purposely avoided this one because I didn’t know if I could handle it so should I watch it myself first or just go in blind with everyone else?

aubrey !!

im suchhh a big ueno and kawai hater, they both made me so mad lmao

Ale

God, I don't know if I'm ready for this... I've been avoiding it for years 🥲

Fedei

I love the stress faces you guys had in the end cause I was screaming my head of too lol

James

This is one of the hardest, and most real movie I've seen in a long time. And yes, Taki from "Your Name" makes a cameo in "Weathering with You." Also, the person who directed Your Name, and Weathering with You also directed Suzume which is a movie that came out last year and will soon be available on Blu Ray (not sure when it'll be available on streaming).

Elina

I'm so glad you guys reacted to this it's one of my favorite animated movies I've seen it probably 20 times and cried every single time.

Daniie Evans

Damn I'm crying watching it again with you guys. This movie hits hard. Especially as someone whos struggled with depression and anxiety for a long time. Seeing Nishimya at the firework festival seemingly having a good time, suddenly get up and leave to go jump off her balcony really portrays depression well because you never know what people are feeling. Glad you guys enjoyed it and we're as gripped as I was. A very strong powerful movie with millions of messages. Thanks for the reaction 💗

Daniie Evans

Also I'm sure people have commented this but this is based on real people except when he fell from the balcony in real life, he actually died but they changed it for the movie to have a nice ending and not be as depressing

asge5hxdc

And somehow boss baby beat this for an Oscar 😔

Tia

You guys seemed confused during the scene where Nishimiya tells Ishida she likes him. Nishimiya says "suki" meaning "like" but Ishida hears "tsuki" meaning "moon". The translation from Japanese to English doesn't work so doesn't make sense if you don't know Japanese :)

Silvana Salinas

1. Silent Voice and Grave of the Fireflies 2. Your Name 3. I want to eat your pancreas

neko

Seeing Shoko reminds me of Violet(their looks kinda resemble to me) from Violet Evergarden. You guys should watch it if you are considering a show from Kyoto Animation. Another beautiful show and a tearjerking one.

Betty H

I always choose Your Name as my favorite because of rewatchability, because damn, is A Silent Voice so tough to rewatch. A Silent Voice is the official english translated name but in Japanese, it's Koe no Katachi (The Shape of Voice). And I will say it again and again, but the lack of a decent instructor/teacher in that one year made a real difference. He was the worst for just ignoring it all, and only calling out Ishida when it was too late. Very reminiscent of the teacher in JJK when Junpei was bullied.

bondbond53

Guys you need to start on those Ghibli films

2023-12-22 21:41:44 CORRECTION: It was snubbed in the Oscars and lost its nomination to Boss Baby. I forgot that pre-qualifiers exist and they get to choose which ones should be nominated. Anyway, it’s tough to watch because it is as real as it can be. Bullying victims carry that scar all throughout their life. Bullies can redeem themselves but not everyone gets to do so. I really liked this because the love story is subtle, it’s more like a story of redemption and forgiving yourself. Thank you for this, guys. 🥰 If the guys decided on Grave of the Fireflies, I would think it will weigh heavily on them. 💔

just want to clarify something I feel like is more important than the Moon/Love confusion. the scene on the bridge after he wakes up, one of the translated lines is complete fucking wrong and it pisses me off. the line when he says, "I want to help YOU live" is actually meant to say, "I want YOU to help ME live". it's so much more powerful if it was translated correctly because it gives her meaning to live and gives her the understanding that she isn't the burden she thinks she is.

bondbond53

I like that this movie shows how kids can be really mean even without a tragic backstory. On another note, I once saw a comment stating the following and i couldn't agree more with it: A Silent Voice is not a story about a guy falling in love with a girl, its about a guy being able to love himself again. As much as Ishida did Shoko wrong he was just a stupid kid and before he even realised it he dug himself into this hole that only his more grown-up self could perceive, and boy did he loathe himself.

DeadLotus

The only thing that still bothers me is that Ueno stayed (honestly f her) but god seeing this movie always fills me with sadness and hate, the two most extreme emotions. Also this takes you for a ride its wild

Guy

an important point that wasn't translated properly from the Ferris wheel is that Shoko said "I don't hate you, I hate myself."

JIMBO

watch t by your self first, coming from a person who has seen it now with this reaction 23 times, even though its only my 2nd fav movie of all time

bondbond53

But that's real life, people like Ueno stay. Also, as much as she was horrible the film shows how people are not black and white

IAMONSTRISM Diaz

Not the Grave of the Fireflies. I went to work with swollen eyes 👀 then rewatched it with my friends and had to ice my eyes and eat two bars of chocolates 🍫 love/hate that movie

姫凛 一色

I never thought you would watch this movie! Your reactions were amazing! I've watched it over and over again three times. I recommend Violet Evergarden next!

姫凛 一色

By the way, intertwining each other's little fingers means a promise, and the gift that Ishida's friend handed him from the bag after he was discharged from the hospital is called a 1,000 paper cranes, and they are made of 1,000 origami paper cranes and spelled out to pray for the other person's happiness and recovery. It's for.

DeadLotus

Oh I know, but that doesn't make her, as a person, any less shitty. She's selfish and suppose to be the unlikeable character. I would say almost irredeemable as she has the least 'redemption arc' moment in the entirety of the film. ( I believe Shimada doesn't count since he's more a filler/background character for Shouya's origin story)

Melissa Huynh

Oh god I def couldn’t hold back the tears and watching this with y’all was my second time.

Starkfern

If you liked this anime, you'll probably like Violet Evergarden.

Miya

Love how invested you guys were with this one. I agree that it's so emotional that it's hard to talk during the scenes. It's a movie that is intentionally slower paced and has a ton of intentional silence to make you think and reflect. Also tons of close ups to set the emotional mood. Very powerful and thought provoking. Best part was seeing all your reactions when Nishimiya was about to jump and he ended up saving her but he fell instead. You were all so tuned in! Lastly, I didn't see anyone mention it but A Silent Voice was originally a manga that got adapted to a movie. You get to see more character development, especially with Ueno, what happens with the teacher, and more story. The movie is different from the manga in some aspects too so wanted to mention it in case you guys might be interested in it.

TerraZetzz

The English dub hits harder for me as an English speaker. The voice actor who plays Shoko in the dub is also deaf. But I love both sub and dub.

Vivi ♡

Damn this was hard to rewatch but it’s just soo good and real. Had me crying again, but I’m so glad you guys watched it!

olivia

the ending was to show that Ueno’s trying to possibly become friends or be neutral with Shouko by learning sign language. She started for Shouya so he would stop viewing her as the detriment of the friend group/always tearing everything apart. She truly cared for Shouya, probably as much as Shouko, just in a very selfish way. It’s universally agreed that Kawai and the Teacher are the worst characters. Kawai had no redeemable qualities, she was always trying to play the victim even though she wasn’t directly involved in bullying Shouko she never did anything to stop it or help her out, so she ultimately was just as involved. She would always cry and pit the blame on others if she was called out for it as well as make it a scene so everyone else would take her side and feel bad for her, for example when she was telling the orange haired guy (forgot his name) about how Shouya used to bully Shouko and she “told him to stop” when she never did. She never had any redemption or actually apologized to Shouko. The teacher is the absolute worst for letting them bully Shouko in the first place. The only defense Shouya and the others had in bullying her was that their kids. It’s not stupid to think that kids are menaces, they can be for sure but that’s because they haven’t matured yet. The Teacher is a full adult and didn’t do ANYTHING to stop the bullying that went on for half a year until the principal was involved and then he called out only Shouya and ultimately ruined his life. Ueno sure is shitty, but she’s at least trying for the friend group and Shouya and she show’s promise that she could completely change in the end, Kawai though hasn’t shown anything and the Teacher just plain sucks.

olivia

ahh Grave of the Fireflies, the greatest movie you will never want to watch again.

HeavenlyR

To me her starting to learn sign language is to mirror Shoya learning sign language after bullying Shoko as a kid out of guilt. She doesn't get a redemption arc moment because she just started her arc at the very end.

Toidleboy

Kawai worse than Ueno 100%

Ale

This got me crying for 2 hours, my eyes are swollen and I have a very important meeting today 😂 either way, what and amazing movie, it hurts but I enjoyed at the same time. Regarding the confession scene, as other had already point out, Shoko is saying "suki" (to like) but Ishida understands "tsuki" (moon) I think Ishida doesn't even think about that Shoko is confessing, honestly as he is in that time of the movie I think he would think that doesn't deserve it 😔 While Ueno is a very unlikable character from the get go, I didn't hate her as I hated Kawai and the teacher, specially the teacher. How is it possible for a grown man (and a teacher to that) to put on the spot that way to a little kid, acting all high and mighty when he knew about the bullying but he didn't do anything to prevent it. He only act up when there was money involved (Shoko's hearing aids that were lost). Then he says that he knows Ishida is the one doing the bullying, which he is, but is not only him, of course the other kids will only blame him if the adult in the situation is only pointing one kid, everyone will just defend themselves, absolutely horrible. The the other girl, Kawai just acting like she does nothing wrong, when in reality she is as bad as any other that bullied Shoko, she even put on spot again to poor Ishida in high school. She then gave him the paper cranes after he was discharged, I felt it was hypocritical of her part, if you guys don't know, there is a leyendo that if you get 1000 paper cranes your wish will come true it's also used to wish for people's recovery , she said that she ask help to everyone, so she involved her classmates, after she did that little scene yelling that Ishida bullied Shoko in front of everyone, so the cranes for me was just another way that she was manipulating everyone into think that she does nothing wrong and she is so innocent, I hate that kind of people, at least Ueno was more sincere with her felling, she didn't express them in the best way, but she stayed true to herself the whole movie, even if she was very rude and had almost no redemption at the end. I don't think I'll ever watch this movie again, in comparison to Your name, but I definitely like this one better 🥺

Nana

It is possible that I am feeling uncomfortable because I am not an English speaker, but is the translation strange or missing in some places? In particular, I think the omission of Shoko's line "I hate myself" is a major blow to the film. Also, purely out of curiosity, how does the English dubbing represent the mishearing of "like(suki)" and "moon(tsuki)"? (As a Japanese speaker, both words sound like "chuki" when said by someone with a lisp.) By the way, no matter how many times I watch this film, Kawai and that teacher are the worst... Incidentally, in the manga version, Kawai is even scummier.

Jesse Gutierrez

9:15 Fulcrum, come in, Yodie gang!

Iulian

Another anime movie i really love it s I want to eat your pancreas . It is def worth watching 100% and don t mind the name

Poragami

I'm talking for everyone when i say, it's time for Studio Ghibli movies.

Mysterious Figure

I think this movie is exceptional and I enjoyed it, if you could say you "enjoyed" something so depressing, but it's an awesome depiction of how bullying can ruin so many lives. Now, please lets have some happier mood and maybe watch a Ghibli movie together? <3

Xio’♡

Loved this reaction! I’m rooting for Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle next 🙂🤞🏻

Philbo

Wait really? I didn’t know the VA was deaf as well

TerraZetzz

Yeah look for "The English Dub for A Silent Voice is one of the best out there." on Reddit.

Philbo

Not gonna lie, I thought brig was gonna lowkey walk out in the beginning 😂 or even that you guys wouldn’t be able to get through the rest of the movie cause that beginning part was so shitty how shoko was being treated by everyone..

olivia

both Sub and Dub VA's are deaf. They did a fantastic job.

Audreyldo

This movie is sooo beautiful and painful.. it was so cool to rewatch it Now you should watch grave of the fireflies, my favorite movie ever

Audreyldo

Of and if i can suggest another movie, watch wolf children, it's a masterpiece

Ella Clare

After all of the emotional trauma, you should definitely watch Howls Moving Castle, or My Neighbor Totoro. Wholesome movies that are stunning in writing, animation, and music

Spencer Wattamaniuk

Yeah, another instance of the official subs being far inferior to the fan groups. This scene is a lot more clear in the fan subs.

teagan

If u watch howls moving castle pls do dub cause Christian Bale voices howl and its the best thing ever

kiiturii

kyotoAnimation are the GOATS, it's sad you'll probably not watch many of their shows as they're not action/shonen but KyoAni were ahead of their time for sure

leah

AYO DROP YALLS LETTERBOXD USERNAMES 🗣️🗣️

i actually didn’t love this movie the first time i watched it just because of ishida and how he treated nishimiya but i definitely appreciate it more having rewatched it with y’all

Miyako Ishida had blood on her clothes and ear because the mother pulled her earring off I guess?

sam

seriously! im still upset over the fact that she didn't get as much backlash or even more than ueno did in the movie

sleepymiffi

A SILENT VOICE IS A MASTERPIECE !!! soooo happy you guys reacted to it ❤️ that movie made me really really emotional but also it had such beautiful and wholesome moments😭 yuzuru(shoko’s little sister) and ishida’s friendship was one of the most fun friendship dynamic of this movie to me, and Shouko is honestly like nr1 “must protect at all cost” fictional character !!! also A Silent Voice is a great rewatch if you want to FEEL something yknow🫡 btw I recommand “Wolf Children” i think its very underrated, one of my fav animated movies ever !!

Hechy

after rewatching koe no katachi and kimi no na wa again i gotta say it isnt close between the two. this one is so much more powerful

Hechy

i think kawai has a decent argument to be worse than ueno just due to her being so two faced. ueno is at least straight up honest

steven

u guys are super lame for making it only 2 eps for hxh. it’s a rlly long show u guys need to go back to 3

Meel

They dropped 4 episodes in 2 hours tfym

Kim555

Spirited Away next?

esie ♡︎

A Silent Voice is definitely my choice over the two. Such a powerful and impactful film.

Mia Malvik

I consider this my favourite movie ever although I've only watched it once, and was unsure whether to watch your reaction to it because I didn't want to "overwrite" the experience I had of my first watch. (Yes, I take it way too seriously). The extent to which I related to some specific situations in this story made it the most unforgettable movie watch I've ever had. Not really a happy one though. But seriously, moment of appreciation for the amazing soundtrack, it's basically only piano but the fact that you can clearly hear the creaking of the pedals, the sound of the keys and the chair just matches the down to earth and real tone of this movie and I had chills throughout, so extremely well done. I understand why some people would enjoy Your Name more, I enjoy it too, but to me they don't even exist in the same universe in terms of story quality. You've mentioned Weathering With You and I thought it was hot garbage( despite good moments) but it would be fun to see your thoughts on it lol. Ghibli is a must, Princess Mononoke is superior but all are amazing

LOVED your reactions to this incredible masterpiece. This movie hits HARD. I love sad shit, but even this gets me baaaad. It's tough for me to pick between "Your Name" and "A Silent Voice" because they are entirely different movies. I love them both for different reasons. This is more emotionally captivating while "Your Name" is just an overall fun watch. I love the realism this one has, but I also love the unique story of "Your Name". Both are beautifully animated. I will only watch this one if I feel up for the emotional heaviness, because I'm guaranteed to cry watching this movie 😂 thanks for the reactions ya'll. Excited to see your take on "Weathering With You."

Alyson Loza

Also, the first time I watched "A Silent Voice," I don't think I appreciated it nearly as much since I couldn't fully relate to a lot of the themes. Now I'm at a point in my life where I personally know a lot of people that struggle with mental health, even myself included. It makes this movie pull at my heart even more. It was a tough rewatch, but also really satisfying since I am much more emotionally mature to understand the message behind this movie. 10/10, all the feels.

Alyson Loza

Agreed with the piano. The sound is incredible, it is so raw. I always get goosebumps at the end song

kiiturii

totoro is a bad take ngl, it's a good kids movie but otherwise quite boring, there are much better ghibli options

kiiturii

consider me surprised, looked it up and apparently she's not lol

MaraReaper

Have all of them watched neon genesis?

DarlingDiamantes

Srry, this is unrelated to a silent voice but I just saw ur reaction to the live action once piece trailer. And I have to say as huge One Piece fan, I don’t care what people have been saying. They are all lying to themselves cuz that live action is so boring and mid. One Peak, I mean Goat Piece on top. Definitely in my top 3 or top 5 😛

Nirriti

What i also really appreciated in this movie, was that we dont have any subtitles for when they use sign language. Its a subtle but great way to show what it's like to not be understood and kind of empathize even more with Nishimiya. Also love your reactions keep up the good work, greetings from Austria <3

Kyle

now that you mentioned it is the footage lost for neon genesis eps 3/4 😭

Max Grodman

Damn I haven’t watched this. I’ll be back when I have

jul ☽

finally watched this and couldn't stop sobbing from the moment that nishimiya tried to kill herself. that "god please just give me enough strength, i'll promise to look everyone in the face" monologue had me dead and was too real for when you face a hard situation and pray

MissJodles

I was literally thinking yesterday that I wish you guys had a Silent Voice reaction, and here it is! Sooooo happy

Linn

Damn the second watch of this movie hit much harder then the first. Watching it again made it easier to absorb a lot of the smaller nuances.

Y Ka

Silent Voice was great and your reactions too. Can you guys add "I want to eat your pancreas" (anime movie) on Netflix on your watchlist? I would love to see your reactions

Faris Alamin

Bawled my eyes out watching this video yesterday. Now I'm back again just to rewatch that scene.

Ace Hollow

so i think this is true but this movie i think its somewhat based on a true story but the end is different i think he died in real life but the author wanted to change it up and i really want to watch you guys react to i want to eat your pancreas instead of weathering with you. I want to eat your pancreas should go first

AA

PLEASE WATCH ORANGE

Please watch "I want to eat your Pancreas" next

Alexis

Watch Maquia next please, it's a very beautiful movie

rosa_gris

I loved how the movie portrayed Ishida’s social anxiety. From the “X”s on other characters faces to the multiple shots of characters’ legs. I was wondering why there was so much focus on characters’ legs and the ground, until I realised that the movie was trying to put us in Ishida’s perspective. It was a little unnerving and felt claustrophobic. I thought it was such a subtle but powerful way to showcase how social anxiety feels.

aotant

Watch the anime erased, it’s not a top of mine but it’s good I feel like you guys might enjoy it

Wei Lim

go watch ano-hana it is very touching and sad its similar to this. its a very underrated anime. highly recommended.

Taylor Corbett

I hate the blonde girl ngl. It's exactly like Ishida says, she just tries to seem lovable. She'll happily go along with the teasing of Nishimiya as long as she isn't doing it herself. She condoned it yet acts like she did nothing wrong. She basically just plays both sides. Even though Ueno is a horrible person, at least she is honest about her thoughts/feelings and doesn't have this facade. She's definitely a character that represents bystanders in the act of bullying.

It's based on real experiences but the story is pointed into an extreme direction. Pretty sure he doesn't die.

I know this is kind of old, but if it hasn't been explained already, in the scene when she confesses to him the word "like" in Japanese sounds similar to the word "moon"

In Japan, when big festivals such as fireworks displays and summer festivals take place, they are signalled before they begin by a loud noise. This is the reason for the smoke before the fireworks display. Also, the last thing Kawai gave to Ishida was a thousand paper cranes. In Japan, it is customary to fold small, colourful origami cranes and give them to people who are ill, wishing them "get well soon".💓
