Started this show after the poll and I gotta say I was absolutely not feeling it for the first 35 or so episodes but then out of nowhere the show had a massive ass glow up. Yorknew was absolutely insane 🔥🔥🔥. It's pretty much a really generic, tropey show till then but you guys just need to push through. Trust me I almost gave up and now I'm so glad I didn't! On episode 60 right now.

A big theme of this show is weaker fighters can use strategy and cooperate with each other to surprise and beat people who are unimaginably stronger than them so I would guess the "X" in the "Hunter X Hunter" is just to stress the importance of hunters working together.

I remember having a crush on Kurapika when I was watching the 1999 version because he reminds me of YYH’s Kurama, but I do not remember this event or episode. Did they change it or am I having a memory lapse? Cannon getting frustrated over the corrections is so funny… 😂 Gosh, Hisoka really is creepy.. now I can almost associate him with Toji Fushiguro. 😶

@Poragami There were good moments before ep 35 but overall if I hadn't heard how good it was in the future I probably would have dropped it. Episode 35 was when I really started to enjoy the show instead of feeling like I just had to push through it.

The Hunter Exam arc of HxH 1999 and HxH 2011 are pretty different. One of the most notable differences is Menchi’s part. If I remember correctly, I think they made sushi in the 1999 version (the original reason they all got eliminated). If you only watched the 1999 version, it would definitely feel off. For example, I think there was a filler episode that introduced a character that doesn’t exist in the manga.

I feel you on that it's definitely a slow burn at the start, but on rewatch you kinda catch so many foreshadowed things. It's kinda crazy how well thought out and structured the story is by the author.

I did the same as you and I'm on EP 55. I mostly enjoyed it and it was a solid 7.5/10 until EP 20 after that it went up to 8.5/10 and now its above 9/10 for me.

I think the first 6 episodes are some of the best episodes, without it you wouldn't get as attached to the main four at all. It's fun to watch people at the start dislike Leorio or not completely understand Kurapika and then slowly as the episodes unfold you start to get a backstory behind the characters and really start to enjoy them. To do that in 6 episodes is pretty remarkable considering all of the other stuff that is going (The intricacy of the hunter exam, characters outside of the main 4 getting screen time)
