New Terra

New places, new people, new ships. It's all a little confusing to me as the Roci crew set off for a new colony by request of the Secretary General. Protomolecule is present and is it there to guard or hurt the settlers.

I could use your assistance in keeping everyone straight as we launch into this new season. Let's go!

To answer a few of your questions while trying to avoiding spoilers: Ashford is still around because his actions in S3, while not great, were not viewed as criminal. Perhaps the real reason is that David Strathaim (the actor) had so much fun doing the show, he asked the producers if it was possible for “Ashford” to stick around for another season. Ashford is policing the area outside the ring to keep pirates from looting inners ships waiting fro the blockade to be lifted. The UN (and presumably Mars) set up a blockade to keep everyone out of the ring space, inners and belters alike, unless they grant clearance. One thing people seem to get confused about is Murtry’s role. They think he’s one of the “scientists,” but he’s the head of the security detail attached to to the RCE mission. He took over as the mission commander after the original one was killed during the landing. (BTW, Amos will keep mispronouncing Murtry’s name, and this gets a lot of creators confused. The scenes on Ilus/New Terra were shot in a quarry “a couple of hours” outside of Toronto. They also increase the aspect ratio of those scenes on Ilus to convey the openness of the new world. The scenes of Bobbie on Mars are not in Book 4. Some of them come from the novella Gods Of Risk and, along with some other added material, help build a bridge to activities in S5 and S6.

You are correct, the Roci has never landed on a planet. Earlier in the episode Alex and Amos were discussing how to rig the Roci for an unassisted landing. (Amos: "I know a guy on Luna". ) I agree with T Arnold that Ashford was only trying to do his best given the very unusual circumstances. Don't forget he also offered the Behemoth to all the wounded in the ring space thus saving many lives. The Behemoth stayed behind in the ring space and was renamed Medina Station. Amos has that interesting conversation with Melba, aka Clarissa, aka Peaches (he calls her that at the end and as far as we know it is a somewhat silly reference to Peach Melba, the dessert!). They got to know each other better on the ride home to Earth and Peaches was helping Amos with the engineering jobs on the Roci. Unfortunately Bobbie decided to head back to Mars to literally face the music after her second abandonment of her post so to speak. She is now helping to break down decommissioned Mars battle ships since the war is over. My best guess about Thomas (the handsome dude in the bar) is that he recognized her from the news feeds about her trial and wanted to know more about what happened in the ring as no one is able to go there.
