Interesting review. I appreciate how you perceive them. One of the things that is very interesting about these headphones is that Quad tuned them to match their Quad ESL speakers with a planar driver. I don't find them soft, I find them close to perfect. Now, I haven't heard the Alara or the Sendy Aiva. But, I did own the Sundara and found the ERA-1 to be a profoundly better headphone. I have listened to a pair of Quad speakers and they really are tuned similarly. Quad states the ERA-1 is best with their PA-1 Tube Amp. I power them with a Pathos Aurium Hybrid Tube Amp and they fucking sing for me. I am not sure I will ever get rid of them. I appreciate your review very much. For you, they go back, for me they stay forever. :)

Whats weird is the outside style feels like MaxFun. But it doesnt exactly match any of their headphones. Then again only one of their headphones have ever come to the states. Thanks for doing the review. For me the single most important thing about the ERA-1s is that with them I have gone back to actually enjoying listening to my music collection, rather than thinking about how the headphones sound. You clearly had some of that feeling in your review. The sound may not be the most precise, but it is warm, punchy and fully extended with excellent bass and un-accentuated treble. The soundstage isn't as wide as the HD800s but it is still wide and better than most other headphones I have had. As for your comparison to a similar set at half the price I am sure that is valid for you, but for those of us that don't have access to the half price headphones, that isn't a reasonable comparison. I read a review recently unfavorably comparing the ERA-1s to the HifiMan Aryas which are twice the price of the Quads. I have had a pair of the Aryas and was really hoping that they would be as much of an improvement over the Quads as the reviewer found them. For me however the Quads proved way better, wider soundstage, more warmth and depth, and back to my original point, just such an enjoyable experience to listen to, and only half the price! The Quads are staying, the Aryas have gone back. And I will return to listening to and enjoying the breadth of my library rather a few demo/test tracks to compare how one headphone or IEM sounds compared to another.

There are many reviews that state they are the best sub $1k headphone on the market. That has been my experience. And they scale beyond belief. The better the source and amp, the better they sound. I agree with you, they are pretty amazing.
