I get your frustration with the women thing Christene but i think it fits when it comes to the setting and theme of the anime. I know anime can be fast and loose with historical norms but I think for this anime, it plays to the larger theme. All of the characters in different ways are dealing with unfair social norms and status. Her being a women samurai is very unheard of and as you can see, the samurai are prisoners to tradition to a fault. Gabi being a ninja who shouldn't have emotions because they make you a weak killer, to his wife being scarred, so unlovable as a women. The pirate brothers having to bear the sins of their father for being a samurai who had to avenge their defeated Lord. Anyway, the next episode will clear some of that up. Really enjoying this anime.
